What it is and what it does
The Omron CP1L-EL20DT1-D is an active-production brick PLC from the CP1L family, packing 12 digital inputs and 8 solid state outputs on a 24VDC rail. Onboard Ethernet means it talks to a panel HMI or upstream controller without an extra comms module, and the battery backup holds your program and retained data through a power loss.
Solid state vs relay – picking the right output type
If you're cross-shopping this against the CP1L-EL20DR-D, the decision comes down to output type. The EL20DR-D uses relay outputs – good for AC loads or higher current, but they wear and bounce. This unit's solid state outputs are faster, silent, and last longer on frequent DC switching (solenoids, small valves, indicator lights). Same 12-input count, same 24VDC supply, same DIN rail mount – just pick the output that matches your loads. The relay version also runs a few grams heavier, but that's not a panel layout concern.
Memory, expansion, and software
32K words of program memory is typical for small machine control – enough for a pick-and-place or a packaging cell. Expansion is limited to one extra module, so plan I/O count up front. CX-One software covers the whole CP1L line, so your existing project files and tag databases carry over.
