What this filter does on the drive output
The VW3A5206 is a sinus output filter designed for Schneider Altivar variable speed drives, rated at 180 A continuous with a maximum permissible voltage of 500 V AC. It converts the PWM waveform from the drive into a sinusoidal voltage and current, reducing motor insulation stress and bearing currents on long cable runs — up to 1000 m for a 55 kW motor at 400 V. The 4 to 8 kHz switching frequency range covers standard IGBT drive outputs without additional derating on the filter itself.
The filter can handle 1.5× In for 60 seconds — useful for motor starting or short overloads, but not sustained. Thermal losses run 400 W at 100 Hz output frequency; that heat stays inside the IP20 enclosure, so panel ventilation matters. The 95 mm² / AWG 4/0 terminals with 20 N·m torque are sized for the 180 A path — verify your cable lug fits the gland plate before wiring.
Lifecycle status — obsolete, but available
Schneider has marked the VW3A5206 as obsolete. If you are designing a new panel, check the Altivar drive manual for the current recommended output filter order code; for a line-down replacement, this part can still be sourced through broker networks.
Pollution degree 2 per EN 50178 means it is rated for normal industrial environments with only non-conductive contamination. The IP20 enclosure requires panel mounting — not for washdown or outdoor use. Vibration resistance is 1 gn from 13 to 200 Hz, with 1.5 mm peak-to-peak below 13 Hz; shock rated at 15 gn for 11 ms.
