80 A at 40 °C — the rating that governs the install
The 3RW4046-1TB05 is a SIRIUS soft starter from Siemens, Size S3 frame, designed to ramp three-phase induction motors up to 80 A at a 40 °C ambient. If the panel ambient runs above 40 °C, the 73 A or 66 A line is the one to budget against the motor FLA, not the headline 80 A. Rated insulation voltage is 600 V, operating frequency 50/60 Hz, and the pollution degree is 3 per IEC 60947-4-2 — meaning it's rated for the conductive-dust and condensation environment typical of industrial control panels.
Termination and wire range — what lands on the lugs
Main power connections use screw-type terminals. The main circuit accepts stranded wire 2 x (10 … 70 mm²) and finely stranded 2 x (10 … 50 mm²); the auxiliary contacts take 2 x (20 … 14 AWG). Solid wire for the control circuit is 2 x (0.5 … 2.5 mm²). That covers everything from a 4 AWG motor feed down to a 22 AWG start signal. Mounting is screw-and-snap-on to DIN rail. The envelope is 170 mm high, 70 mm wide, 190 mm deep. Clearance above the unit is 60 mm, below 40 mm, to the side 30 mm. With the optional fan, the mounting surface can be rotated ±90° or tilted ±22.5°; without the fan, rotation and tilt are limited to ±10°.
Protection and control — what's built in
Motor overload protection is integrated — no separate overload relay needed. Intrinsic device protection (thyristor overtemperature, phase imbalance, missing phase) is also on board. Adjustable current limitation lets you set the starting current between 20 % and the full rated current. An external reset input is provided. The maximum motor cable length is 300 m — relevant when the starter sits in a central MCC and the motor is at the far end of the line.
