Trip class and motor protection — the number that decides the start
The 3RW5214-1TC05: That's the standard for most pump, fan, and compressor starts where the load accelerates in 5–8 seconds. The wider class doesn't change the hardware; it's a firmware setting. The minimum settable motor current is 7.5 A, and the minimum load is 15% of that value — so don't try to soft-start a 2 A motor on this frame. The current sensing resolution won't give you reliable protection below about 1.1 A.
Fieldbus support — one part, five networks
This soft starter carries PROFIBUS, Modbus RTU, Modbus TCP, EtherNet/IP, and PROFINET on board — no external gateway module needed. The PROFINET variant also supports PROFIenergy for coordinated energy management across the line. The control supply voltage range is 200–600 V, so it runs directly from the same line voltage as the motor — no control transformer required. That simplifies panel wiring for multi-voltage plants running 208 V in one area and 480 V in another.
Application features — pump ramp down and soft torque
Pump Ramp Down gradually reduces torque on shutdown instead of coasting, which eliminates water hammer in long pipe runs. Soft Torque reduces mechanical shock on geared or belt-driven loads during the start ramp. At 50 °C expect roughly a 10% derating; at 60 °C it's about 20%. Mounting position allows ±10° rotation and forward/backward tilt on a vertical surface.
Approvals and compliance — UL, CSA, CE on the nameplate
The 3RW5214-1TC05 carries CE marking for the European market, UL approval for North America, and CSA approval for Canada. No separate certification paperwork is needed for most panel builds — the nameplate covers it. The service factor is 1.0, meaning no overload margin beyond the set current. If your motor has a 1.15 SF, you still set the starter to the motor nameplate FLA — the starter's protection curve does not follow the motor's SF.
This is a current-production part (lifecycle stage: current). It's sourced through authorized Siemens distribution and quoted against your BOM quantity. No last-time-buy or obsolescence risk on the horizon. Mounting is screw-fixed to the panel or DIN rail, with 100 mm clearance above and 75 mm below for airflow.
