Soft starter for motor starting duty
The Siemens 3RW5215-1TC15 is a hybrid switching device — a soft starter — rated for motor control across 200 to 600 V AC (50/60 Hz). Its minimum settable current is 11.5 A, and it offers three trip classes per IEC 60947-4-2: CLASS 10A (default), CLASS 10E, and CLASS 20E. This means the overload protection curve can be matched to the motor's starting profile — CLASS 10A for standard starts, CLASS 20E for high-inertia loads like fans or centrifuges where the start time extends beyond 10 seconds. The unit supports multiple industrial fieldbus protocols natively: PROFIBUS, Modbus RTU, Modbus TCP, EtherNet/IP, and PROFINET standard. It also includes PROFIenergy capability when paired with the PROFINET communication module, allowing energy-saving idle states during production pauses.
Trip class and thermal management
Trip class selection is critical for motor protection coordination. CLASS 20E extends that window to 20 seconds — necessary for loads with high starting inertia where the motor takes longer to reach full speed. If the trip class is set too fast for the application, nuisance tripping during start-up will occur; too slow and the motor winding may overheat before the starter disconnects. In a panel with poor airflow or adjacent heat sources, the effective current rating drops — plan the thermal budget accordingly. The unit is screw-fixed to the mounting surface, not DIN-rail snap-on, so panel layout must account for the 170 mm width and 275 mm height with clearance: 100 mm upward, 10 mm forward, 75 mm downward, and 5 mm at the sides.
