Soft starter for hazardous-area motor starting
The Siemens 3RW5534-6HA04 is a soft starter rated for 200-480 V supply, designed to ramp motors up and down smoothly while limiting inrush current. ATEX and IECEx certification allow installation in Zone 1/21 hazardous areas — the soft starter itself is not the ignition source, but the ATEX marking means it's assessed for use in explosive atmospheres per the equipment directive. Trip class is selectable: CLASS 10A / 10E (default) / 20E / 30E per IEC 60947-4-2, so you match the thermal overload protection to the motor start duty — 10A for normal starts, 30E for high-inertia loads.
Panel fit and thermal derating
The unit measures 306 mm high, 185 mm wide, 203 mm deep with a 100 mm clearance above and 75 mm below for airflow — plan the gland plate and DIN-rail layout accordingly. Side clearance is 5 mm; no rear clearance needed. Operating ambient is -25 to +60 °C, but derating applies at 40 °C or above — a panel builder should derate the continuous current above 40 °C per the manufacturer's curve, not just the nameplate rating.
Fieldbus and control flexibility
The soft starter integrates via Modbus RTU, Modbus TCP, EtherNet/IP, and PROFIBUS, with PROFIenergy support through PROFINET communication modules. An analog output configurable as 4-20 mA or 0-10 V feeds a remote SCADA or PLC analog input for motor current feedback. DC braking, pump ramp down, and a breakaway pulse handle specific load profiles — pump ramp down prevents water hammer on pump stops, breakaway pulse breaks stuck loads loose before ramping.
CE, UL, and CSA approvals cover European and North American installations. Accuracy Class 5 per IEC 61557-12 defines the measurement uncertainty for the integrated current/voltage metering — relevant for energy monitoring without a separate power meter. Service factor 1.15 means the soft starter can handle 115% of rated current continuously, matching typical motor service factors.
