What it is and what it does
The Siemens SENTRON 3VA1080-3ED32-0AF0 is a 3-pole molded case circuit breaker (MCCB) designed for line protection in distribution panels. It carries a continuous current rating of 80 A at 40 °C, with a slight thermal derating to 74 A at 70 °C ambient. The TM210 thermal-magnetic release handles overloads and short-circuits without external control power.
Breaking capacity — what it means for fault duty
The interrupting rating tells you where this breaker can safely clear a fault without welding or rupturing. At 240 V it breaks 75.6 kA; at 415 V, 52.5 kA; at 440 V, 32 kA; and at 500 V and 690 V it holds at 7.5 kA. The rated insulation voltage is 800 V, so the internal clearances support 690 V line-to-line use. For a 480 V panel with a 50 kA available fault current, this breaker covers the high-fault end at 240 V but you need to check the 440 V figure (32 kA) against your actual fault study — a common gotcha when the transformer secondary is 480 V.
Panel fit and auxiliary switch
Dimensions are 130 mm tall, 76.2 mm wide (3 in), and 70 mm deep — a standard MCCB footprint that drops into most DIN-rail or panel-mount bases without re-drilling. It ships with one auxiliary switch and one trip alarm switch (HQ configuration), so you get remote status and fault indication without adding a separate accessory module. Power loss is 19.2 W max — account for that in a sealed enclosure thermal calc.
