Commutating choke for converter duty
The Siemens 4EU5021-0AC00 is a 3-phase commutating choke (line reactor) rated for 617 A continuous at 380 V AC, 50 Hz. It is designed for converter input circuits where it limits di/dt, reduces harmonics, and protects the rectifier from line notching and commutation notches. The 0.00018 H inductance per phase and 15.62 % relative inductive voltage drop define its impedance — this is the figure that governs how much fault current the choke limits and how much voltage sag the DC link sees under load.
Rated 617 A AC continuous, the choke is sized for the input of a converter driving a motor load drawing roughly that line current — think a 315–355 kW drive on 400 V class supply. The DC rating of 756.1 A tells you the choke can handle the higher RMS current in DC-link applications if repurposed, but the primary role is AC line-side. The 1310 W coil loss and 345 W iron loss sum to about 1.65 kW of heat that must be ventilated out of the enclosure; IP00 means no ingress protection — the choke is an open-frame component that goes inside a panel or cabinet, never in a washdown or dusty zone. Class H insulation (180 °C rated) gives thermal headroom for the 40 °C ambient rating, so it can sit in a warm cabinet without derating.
Physical footprint and connections
Dimensions: 0.518 m wide × 0.565 m high × 0.318 m deep — a substantial block that needs a floor-mount or heavy shelf in the panel, not a DIN rail. Main circuit connections are flat-type terminals (bus-bar compatible), not screw clamps; plan for bolted copper bars or braided straps rated for the full 617 A. The three phases enter and exit on the same terminal plane, so layout the bus work accordingly.
