The 40 A continuous rating and 300 mA residual sensitivity suit it for general-purpose feeder or submain protection where the load is resistive or mixed and a 300 mA threshold is acceptable per local code (common for fire protection rather than personnel shock protection, which typically requires 30 mA). Type AC means it detects only sinusoidal AC residual currents — it will not reliably trip on pulsed DC or smooth DC fault currents, so it is not suitable for circuits with variable-speed drives, UPS systems, or other power-electronics loads that can generate DC fault components.
