Fail-safe I/O slice for distributed safety zones
The Siemens 6ES7146-5FF00-0BA0 is a compact ET 200AL fail-safe I/O module combining 4 fail-safe digital inputs and 2 fail-safe digital outputs in a single IP67-rated block with 4xM12 connectors. The safety outputs switch at 24 VDC and are rated 2 A per channel, with overload and short-circuit protection built in. The inputs detect signal "1" from +15 to +30 VDC with a typical current draw of 4.85 mA at 24 V, making them compatible with standard 3-wire PNP safety sensors and e-stops.
Fit and integration constraints
Ambient range is -30 °C to +55 °C with no derating on the outputs up to the full 4 A total (2 x 2 A) at 55 °C. The 4.7 W typical power loss stays within the thermal budget of a sealed IP67 enclosure, but if the module is inside a non-ventilated junction box on a hot factory floor, that 4.7 W plus heat from adjacent blocks should be summed against the box's dissipation rating.
For volume or scheduled releases, the RFQ should specify the annual quantity and preferred delivery cadence.
Diagnostics and commissioning detail
The module supports I&M data (I&M0 to I&M3) and a parameterizable diagnostic alarm, so the PROFIsafe controller reads the module identity and fault history without a field visit. Input and output filter times are adjustable from 0.8 ms to 12.8 ms for both rising and falling edges — set to 0.8 ms for fast safety sensors or 12.8 ms to debounce a mechanical e-stop contact. Wire-break detection is active on the outputs when they are off (switched to 0), and the module detects short-circuits on inputs, outputs, and the encoder supply. The 8-byte input and 6-byte output process image maps directly into the safety program's F-runtime group.
