Overview
The 6ES7452-1AH00-0AE0 is a Siemens FM 452 cam controller module that accepts 5 V differential input signals per RS 422 and outputs 16 cam tracks at up to 1 MHz. It runs on a 24 V supply drawing 8.1 W and requires a 48-pin front connector for field wiring.
Function & operation
The FM 452 decodes incremental encoder signals (A, B, zero mark absent) and absolute encoder SSI data to synchronise cam outputs with shaft position. Its 11 digital inputs serve as reference cams or enable signals, while the 16 transistor outputs switch loads up to 0.5 A each at 24 V. The 1 MHz frequency limit defines the maximum encoder pulse rate — suitable for high-speed rotary axes on packaging or printing machines. Cam tracks are defined in software; the module compares actual position against programmed switch points and drives outputs with less than 1 ms jitter. The 5 V differential input (RS 422) rejects common-mode noise on long encoder cables, and the 24 V supply powers both the module logic and the output drivers.
Applications
The FM 452 cam controller is used on rotary machines where mechanical cam boxes are replaced with electronic cam profiles — typical on packaging lines, printing presses, converting machinery and assembly stations. It synchronises multiple output events per revolution, such as glue application, cut-off knives, or pick-and-place heads, based on encoder position rather than time.
Integration & mounting
The module measures 25 mm wide, 210 mm deep, and 290 mm high, weighing 650 g. It mounts on a Siemens S7-400 rack and connects to the backplane via its 48-pin front connector. Power draw of 8.1 W must be included in the rack power budget; the 24 V supply is shared with the output load circuit.
