Failsafe CPU with integrated PROFIsafe
The 6ES7516-3FN01-0AB0 is a failsafe CPU supporting FBD and LAD programming including failsafe blocks. Safety logic is written in the same editor as standard logic. PROFIsafe V2.4 / V2.6 is onboard, so this CPU talks safety over PROFINET without an extra F-host module. The safety application rides the same cable as standard I/O — cuts the wiring count in half on a safety zone.
Process image and I/O capacity
32 kbyte of inputs and 32 kbyte of outputs land in the process image. For a mid-size line that means you can map roughly 500 digital channels or a mix of analog and fast counters without hitting the I/O ceiling. The 16-channel onboard DI handles local interlock signals — the rest goes over PROFINET. Up to 8 communication modules or CPs (PROFIBUS, PROFINET, Ethernet) can be inserted total. If you need more than 8 fieldbus drops, you are looking at a distributed IO architecture rather than stuffing the rack.
Network redundancy and protocols
MRP (Media Redundancy Protocol) is supported with the CPU acting as Automanager, Manager, or Client per IEC 62439-2 Edition 2.0. In a ring topology the reconfiguration time stays under 200 ms — enough for most conveyor and material-handling lines to ride through a cable break without dropping the safety zone. MODBUS TCP is native — no extra gateway needed when talking to a VFD, flow meter, or third-party HMI. Also carries DHCP, DNS, DCP, SNMP, LLDP, HTTP/HTTPS for standard IT integration into a plant network.
Environmental range and physical fit
The 70 mm wide, 147 mm tall, 129 mm deep footprint fits a standard 80 mm DIN-rail slot; leave 20 mm clearance above for the heat sink fins.
