SIL 3 safety inputs for hazard zone guarding
The Siemens 6ES7526-1BH00-0AB0 is a safety-rated digital input module for the S7-1500 platform, certified SIL 3 per IEC 61508. That means it can serve in safety functions up to the highest single-fault-tolerant integrity level — think emergency-stop circuits, light-curtain monitoring, or two-hand control on a press line, where a failure must not lead to loss of the safety function. It reads 24 VDC P-switching (source) inputs — the module sinks current from the sensor, which is the standard wiring for most safety-rated proximity switches and e-stop pushbuttons. The input thresholds are -30 to +5 V for signal 0, and +15 to +30 V for signal 1, so a nominal 24 V sensor signal is well within the guaranteed ON range.
Output current and mounting derating
The four outputs are rated 300 mA each, but that drops to 100 mA when the module is mounted vertically — the derating is due to natural convection cooling in a tall cabinet. If you are stacking modules in a vertical DIN-rail row, budget 100 mA per output channel and you will not hit the thermal limit. Typical power loss is 4.6 W, which is modest for a safety module with diagnostics. The module draws its 24 V from the backplane bus; no separate load supply needed for the electronics.
Diagnostics and commissioning
Diagnostics are comprehensive: a red ERROR LED for module faults, a green RUN LED for operational status, and per-channel green LEDs for signal state. The module supports I&M data (I&M0 to I&M3), diagnostic alarms, and firmware updates via the backplane — useful for tracking revision level across a fleet of machines. Input filter times are parameterizable from 0.4 ms to 20 ms for both rising and falling edges. For a fast safety input like a light curtain, set the minimum debounce; for a pushbutton, a longer filter avoids nuisance trips from contact bounce.
