The ABB PSTX142 (1SFA898210R7000) is a soft starter with built-in auto phase sequence detection — it verifies the incoming phase rotation before the motor starts, so you don't risk a reverse-spinning conveyor or pump on commissioning. Ramp time is adjustable from 1 to 120 seconds, which lets you tune the acceleration for the load — a loaded crusher needs a longer ramp than a light fan. The control circuit runs on 24 V DC; the main control supply accepts 100…250 V AC, so the logic stays isolated from the power stage.
Communications and integration
This unit speaks Modbus-RTU, Modbus-TCP, Ethernet/IP, EtherCAT, DeviceNet, CANopen, Profibus, Profinet, BACnet-IP, and BACnet-MSTP — essentially every fieldbus you'll find in a modern panel. That means the PSTX142 drops into a greenfield EtherCAT line or a legacy Profibus installation without a gateway. The main circuit terminals are bars; torque them to 14 N·m. Analog outputs are configurable as 0…10 V, 0…20 mA, or 4…20 mA, so you can feed a speed reference or current signal to a PLC analog card directly.
Protection and diagnostics
Electronic overload protection is built in — no separate overload relay needed. The protection suite covers current imbalance, underload, earth fault, locked rotor, over/under voltage, phase reversal, PTC/PT-100 motor thermal inputs, and a user-defined protection set. That's a lot of ground fault and thermal coverage without external modules. Warning outputs flag 15 conditions including faulty fan, EOL, thyristor overload, and THD(U). Separate signal relays for run, fault, bypass, and overload give discrete status back to the controller. LED indicators on the front (green run, red fault, yellow protection) let a technician read the state at a glance.
