RCD for 480Y/277 VAC panels — 40 A, 4-pole, 30 mA trip
The ABB F204AC-40/0.03 is a 4-pole residual current device from the F200 series, rated 40 A continuous with a 30 mA rated residual operating current. It mounts on DIN rail and is listed to UL 1053 for ground-fault protection on 480Y/277 VAC wye systems. The 30 mA trip threshold provides personnel protection against lethal shock currents, while the 40 A current rating handles branch circuits feeding lighting, small motor loads, or receptacle groups in commercial and industrial panels.
The 40 A rating governs the maximum continuous load the RCD can carry without nuisance tripping from thermal effects. On a 480Y/277 VAC supply, that translates to roughly 33 kVA of three-phase load capacity — enough for a lighting panel, a small HVAC unit, or a machine-tool disconnect. Four-pole switching means the device opens all three phases plus the neutral. This is mandatory on 480Y/277 VAC wye systems where a neutral-to-ground fault could otherwise go undetected by a 3-pole device. The 30 mA residual trip level is the standard threshold for personnel protection per UL 1053. It will clear a ground fault before ventricular fibrillation becomes likely, but may nuisance-trip on circuits with high leakage from VFDs, UPS systems, or long cable runs — factor that into the branch-circuit assignment. DIN-rail mounting simplifies panel integration: the unit clips onto standard 35 mm rail and occupies a 4-module width. No additional brackets or panel cutouts needed.
UL 1053 listing covers ground-fault sensing and relaying equipment for use in ordinary locations. The F204AC-40/0.03 is also CE marked for European markets, though the primary design target is North American 480Y/277 VAC distribution.
