The Schneider Electric A9L08300 is an Acti9 iPRD8 modular surge arrester — a Type 2 + 3 device with a pluggable MOV cartridge, rated 3P (three poles) for a 400 V AC TN-C or IT 230 V earthing system. It clamps line-to-PE surges at a maximum continuous voltage of 350 V L/PE and discharges up to 8 kA common mode (L/PE) on a Type 3 test wave, with a nominal discharge current of 2.5 kA. The open-circuit voltage (Uoc) is 10 kV for Type 3 common mode L/PE, and the voltage protection level (Up) stays under 1.2 kV. This is a distribution-network surge arrester, not a signal-line protector — it goes on the main or sub-distribution board to shunt lightning-induced and switching transients before they reach downstream equipment.
Clip-on DIN rail mounting (EN 60715) — occupies 6 modules of 9 mm pitch (54 mm total width). The housing is white RAL 9003, 85 mm tall and 69 mm deep. Tunnel-type terminals accept 2.5 to 25 mm² rigid or 4 to 16 mm² flexible conductors; tighten to 3.5 N·m. The IK03 impact rating (IEC 62262) means it withstands 0.35 J — standard for enclosed panel gear, not for exposed outdoor mounting. Operating temperature range is -25 to 60 °C, storage -40 to 85 °C, relative humidity 5 to 95 %. Operating altitude is limited to 2000 m.
Coordination with upstream overcurrent protection
The iPRD8 requires an associated disconnector — either a circuit breaker (iC60L, iC60N, or iC60H, 10 A curve C) or a gG fuse (25 A or 80 A, depending on the prospective fault current). The breaker's interrupting capacity (Icu) ranges from 10 kA to 25 kA, and the fuse's from 15 kA to 50 kA. This coordination ensures the surge arrether is safely disconnected if the MOV fails short-circuit. The temporary overvoltage (Ut) withstand is 337 V L/N for 5 seconds; above that, the device enters a safe failure mode at 422 V L/PE for 720 ms or 1200 V N/PE for 200 ms. Ground leakage current (Ipe) is 0.6 mA.
