The Schneider Electric A9L08400 is an Acti9 iPRD8 modular surge arrester — a Type 2 + 3 device combining MOV and GDT technology for the electrical distribution network. It protects TN-C-S systems at 230/400 V AC (+/- 10 %), 50/60 Hz. The 4-pole configuration covers, L2, L3, and N with common-mode protection. Rated for a nominal discharge current of 2.5 kA per mode (L/PE and N/PE) and a maximum discharge current of 8 kA. The voltage protection level stays under 1.2 kV for Type 3 common mode L/PE. That means it clamps fast enough to protect downstream electronics from the bulk of a surge event.
Clip-on DIN rail mount, 8 x 9 mm pitches wide. Dimensions: 85 mm high, 72 mm wide, 69 mm deep. Tunnel-type terminals top and bottom accept 2.5 to 35 mm² conductors; tighten to 2.5 N·m. The white (RAL 9003) housing blends into standard distribution board layouts. Relative humidity 5 to 95 %. Rated for operation up to 2000 m altitude. IK03 impact protection per IEC 62262 — adequate for enclosed panel mounting where accidental tool contact is the main risk.
Backup protection and coordination
This surge arrester requires an upstream overcurrent protective device. Schneider specifies several options: an iC60L 10 A curve C (Icu 25 kA), iC60N 10 A curve C (Icu 10 kA), iC60H 10 A curve C (Icu 15 kA), or fuses gG 25 A (Icu 15 kA) or gG 80 A (Icu 50 kA). Temporary overvoltage withstand: 337 V L/N for 5 seconds, and 1200 V N/PE for 200 ms in safe failure mode. The ground residual current is 0.003 mA under normal conditions, rising to 0.6 mA in fault — well below thresholds that would nuisance-trip an RCD.
Compliant with EN 61643-11:2012 and IEC 61643-11:2011. Carries KEMA-KEUR and NF quality labels.
