The Schneider Electric A9L16557 is an Acti9 iPRD Type 2 surge arrester in a 1P+N configuration, rated for 230 V AC (+/- 10 %) operational voltage with a maximum continuous operating voltage (Uc) of 340 V on L/N and L/PE, and 260 V on N/PE. It handles a nominal discharge current (In) of 20 kA per mode and a maximum discharge current (Imax) of 65 kA across common and differential modes. The protection level (Up) is <1.5 kV for Type 2 L/N. This unit includes a remote signalling contact (1 C/O, 0.25 A/250 V AC) for status monitoring.
The Type 2 classification (per EN 61643-11 / IEC 61643-11) means this arrester is designed for the main distribution board or sub-distribution board in a TN-S or TT earthing system — it handles induced surge currents from switching or indirect lightning strikes, not direct strikes (that is Type 1 territory). The 65 kA Imax tells you the maximum single-surge current it can safely divert without failing; the 20 kA In is the rated current it can handle repeatedly over its life. The 1P+N pole configuration covers a single-phase line and neutral, common in small commercial or residential final circuits. The MOV + GDT hybrid technology combines a metal-oxide varistor for fast clamping with a gas discharge tube for higher energy handling and reduced leakage.
Width is 36 mm (2 modular spaces at 9 mm pitch each, 4 pitches total). Tunnel-type terminals accept 2.5 to 35 mm² conductors on both top and bottom, with a tightening torque of 2.5 N.m. The white (RAL 9003) housing matches the Acti9 family aesthetic for panel builds. The remote signalling contact allows integration with a PLC or building management system for remote status of the surge protection element.
Designed and tested to EN 61643-11 and IEC 61643-11 for Type 2 surge protective devices. The enclosure carries an IK03 impact protection rating per IEC 62262. Relative humidity range is 5 to 90 %. Operating altitude is limited to 2000 m.
