The Schneider Electric A9L16562 is an Acti9 iPRD40r modular Type 2 surge arrester with a pluggable cartridge, designed for 1-pole + neutral protection in small commercial distribution boards. Rated for 230 V AC (+/- 10 %) at 50/60 Hz, it handles a maximum continuous operating voltage (Uc) of 340 V on L/PE and L/N, and 260 V on N/PE. The maximum discharge current (Imax) is 40 kA per mode (common and differential), with a nominal discharge current (In) of 15 kA per mode. This means it can safely divert a 40 kA surge event once, and repeatedly handle 15 kA surges — typical for protecting sub-distribution boards against lightning-induced transients in TN-S or TT earthing systems. The voltage protection level (Up) is <1.4 kV in both common and differential modes, which keeps let-through voltage low enough to protect downstream equipment rated for impulse withstand. The arrester uses MOV + GDT technology — a metal-oxide varistor paired with a gas discharge tube for faster response and lower leakage.
Clip-on DIN rail mounting, 36 mm wide (4 x 9 mm pitches). Tunnel-type terminals on both top and bottom accept 2.5 to 35 mm² conductors; tighten to 2.5 N·m. The part ships with a white (RAL 9003) housing and includes an integral remote signalling contact (1 C/O, rated 0.25 A / 250 V AC) for monitoring the arrester status from a PLC or panel indicator. The manufacturer specifies an associated circuit breaker for back-up protection: an iC60N, iC60H, or iC60L rated 40 A curve C, with Icu from 10 kA to 25 kA depending on the breaker variant. This breaker must be installed upstream to handle fault currents the arrester cannot interrupt alone.
Operates from -25 °C to 60 °C, stores from -40 °C to 85 °C, with relative humidity 5 to 90 %. Altitude limit is 2000 m. The enclosure carries IK03 impact protection per IEC 62262. Compliant with EN 61643-11 and IEC 61643-11. Carries quality labels KEMA-KEUR, OVE, and NF. Suitable for TN-S and TT earthing systems.
