The Schneider Electric A9L16597 is an Acti9 iPRD40r modular surge arrester — a Type 2 MOV-based unit rated for 230/400 V AC distribution networks in IT earthing systems. It carries a maximum discharge current of 40 kA per pole (common mode L/PE and N/PE) and a nominal discharge current of 15 kA. The 4-pole configuration with remote signalling (1 C/O contact rated 0.25 A / 250 V AC) makes it suitable for panel applications where remote monitoring of arrester status is required.
Clip-on DIN rail mounting (72 mm wide, 81 mm tall, 69 mm deep) fits standard panel enclosures. The tunnel-type terminals accept 2.5 to 35 mm² conductors, with a tightening torque of 2.5 N·m. The Type 2 classification per EN/IEC 61643-11 means it is designed for the main distribution board to limit overvoltages from switching transients and indirect lightning — not for direct-strike primary protection. The 460 V Uc (maximum continuous operating voltage) matches 230/400 V AC networks with typical tolerances. Operating temperature range is -25 to +60 °C, storage -40 to +85 °C, with 5 to 90 % relative humidity.
Associated circuit breaker requirement
The iPRD40r requires an associated circuit breaker for overcurrent protection and disconnection. Schneider specifies the iC60N, iC60H, or iC60L at 40 A curve C, with Icu ratings of 10 kA, 15 kA, or 25 kA respectively. This is a mandatory pairing — the arrester alone does not provide overcurrent protection.
