Add-on RCD for Acti9 MCB line
The Schneider Electric A9Y80640 is an add-on residual current device from the Acti9 Vigi iC40 range, designed to clip onto the outgoing side of a compatible Acti9 miniature circuit breaker. Mounting is clip-on to DIN rail, occupying 2 modules of 9 mm pitch (18 mm total width). Rated operational voltage is 230 V AC at 50/60 Hz, with an insulation voltage of 400 V AC and impulse withstand of 4 kV per EN/IEC 61009-2-1.
The 30 mA sensitivity is the standard threshold for personal protection against fatal electric shock — it clears a fault before heart fibrillation can occur. The instantaneous trip (no intentional time delay) means it operates within 300 ms on a solid ground fault, which is appropriate for final subcircuits. Type A detection covers the rectified DC pulses from single-phase power supplies (computers, LED drivers, VFDs), so this unit is suitable for general-purpose socket outlets and lighting circuits in commercial or residential panels. Rated current of 40 A matches a 40 A MCB upstream — do not oversize the RCD relative to the breaker, as the RCD's own current-carrying capacity must equal or exceed the circuit rating. The voltage-independent tripping mechanism means the device does not rely on the mains voltage to detect a fault; it uses the fault current itself to energize the trip coil, so it remains functional even if the neutral is lost upstream.
Clip-on mounting to DIN rail (EN 60715) and 2-module width make this a straightforward addition to an existing Acti9 distribution board. The tunnel-type terminals accept 1–16 mm² rigid or 1–10 mm² flexible cable, with a stripping length of 14 mm and tightening torque of 2 N·m. Ambient operating range is -25 to 60 °C, storage -40 to 85 °C, with up to 95% relative humidity at 55 °C — adequate for enclosed panel environments but not for direct outdoor exposure. IP20 rated (finger-safe) for the device body; IP40 when installed in a modular enclosure. Maximum operating altitude is 2000 m without derating.
