18.5 kW VFD for HVAC duty with integrated safety
The Schneider Electric ATH230D18N4 is an Altivar HVAC ATH200 series drive rated for 18.5 kW motor power on a 3-phase 480 V supply. It is a standard-version cabinet-mount drive with an integrated EMC filter, covering the C2/C3 environment categories per IEC 61800-3. Line current draw is 55.3 A at 380 V and 42.4 A at 500 V, with an apparent power rating of 36.7 kVA at 500 V. The output frequency range extends to 0.599 kHz, suitable for fan and pump speed control.
Safety and compliance package
The drive carries SIL 3 (IEC 61508) and PL = e (ISO 13849-1) safety integrity, with a Safe Torque Off (STO) function on the discrete inputs. This meets the functional-safety requirements for guarding and emergency-stop circuits in HVAC installations. Markings include CULus, CE, UKCA, KC, EAC, ATEX, and RCM, covering North American, European, Eurasian, and Korean regulatory jurisdictions. Standards compliance spans IEC 61800-5-1, IEC 61800-3, UL 508C, IEC 61508, and ISO 13849-1.
Fieldbus and control interfaces
The drive supports Modbus serial and BACnet MS/TP over a 2-wire RS-485 physical interface with RJ45 connector. Baud rates are configurable from 4800 bps to 76.8 kbit/s, with RTU or MS/TP frame formats. Analogue inputs include one voltage (0–10 V DC), one bipolar differential (±10 V DC), and one current (0–20 mA or 4–20 mA configurable), all 10-bit resolution. Six discrete logic inputs accept 24 V DC, with DI5 programmable as a pulse input up to 30 kHz.
Application functions and protection
Built-in functions include fire mode, run permissive, PID controller with additional PID, damper control, and underload detection for broken belt — all tailored for HVAC fan and pump control. Protection covers line supply phase loss, motor phase loss, overvoltage/undervoltage, overheating, motor overload with PTC probes, short-circuit between motor phases, and overcurrent between output phases and earth.
