What a 4.8 MW drive means on the mill floor
The ATV1200A57206060 is a medium-voltage AC drive rated for 4782 kW motor power, supplied from a 2970–3630 V line through a 30-pulse diode rectifier bridge. That 30-pulse front end keeps input harmonics low enough to skip a dedicated harmonic filter on most mill buses — the transformer secondary windings handle the phase shifting. The drive is designed for synchronous and asynchronous motors, so it covers both the main mill stand drives and the larger wound-rotor or PM motors in the line. Overload capability is specified in four bands: 1.2 × In for 60 s and 1.5 × In for 3 s under standard overload, plus 1.5 × In for 60 s and 1.85 × In for 3 s under high overload. On a hot-strip mill where the cobble catch can spike the torque demand for a few seconds, the 1.85 × In / 3 s window is the one that keeps the drive from tripping on a transient overload that the upstream breaker would see as a fault.
Physical footprint and integration constraints
The drive ships as a floor-standing enclosure with separate air flows for the power cells and the control section. Overall dimensions are 3040 mm high × 7770 mm wide × 1800 mm deep. That width is the limiting dimension for most plant-floor layouts — you need a bay wide enough to swing the doors fully open for cell access. The enclosure colour is grey RAL 7032. Cooling is forced convection, moving 80,000 m³/h of air at standard efficiency. That volume drives the HVAC and ducting design — the room's air-handling system must supply clean, filtered air at that rate, or the drive derates. Operating altitude is 1000–2000 m with a 0.6 % current derating per 100 m above 1000 m. Noise level at full load is 80 dB. Power connections are bar-type terminals, M10 screws, clamping capacity 6 × 40 mm² per phase, with cable entry from the bottom or top. The input line prospective short-circuit current rating is 31.5 kA for 150 ms — this sets the upstream breaker's let-through requirement for fault coordination.
Standards, isolation, and environmental ratings
The drive carries CE marking and complies with EN/IEC 60204-11, EN/IEC 60529, EN/IEC 61800-3 (EMC), EN/IEC 61800-4, and EN/IEC 61800-5-1 (safety). Electrical isolation is maintained between power and control circuits. The integrated EMC filter covers the conducted emission limits for the second environment (industrial) per EN/IEC 61800-3. Pollution degree is 2 per EN/IEC 61800-5-1, overvoltage category II. Dielectric strength between earth and power terminals is 20 kV AC. Operating position is vertical ±10°, relative humidity 0–90 % (0–95 % optional). Vibration resistance is 4.9 m/s² from 10–50 Hz.
Control I/O and auxiliary supplies
The drive includes 4 software-configurable analogue inputs (0–20 mA / 4–20 mA, 24 V max, 250 Ω impedance) and 2 analogue outputs (same current ranges, 250 Ω). Discrete inputs are 6 standard, expandable to 10. The control section requires an external 220 V AC supply at 3 kVA; the cooling fans run on 380 V AC. An optional external 220 V AC/DC control supply is available. The product composition includes two plinths, a phase-shifting transformer, medium-voltage arrestors, cooling fans, a human-machine interface, and 15 power cells. The HMI is the primary commissioning interface — all I/O mapping, motor data entry, and parameter tuning happen through it.
