What the power ratings mean for your motor load
The ATV630C31N4 delivers 315 kW (500 hp) in normal duty and 250 kW (400 hp) in heavy duty, with a continuous output current of 616 A at 2.5 kHz switching frequency for normal duty and 481 A for heavy duty. The line current draw at 480 V normal duty is 461 A; at 380 V normal duty it pulls 569 A. These are the numbers you use for sizing the upstream protection and supply transformer — the heavy-duty figures govern if your load profile includes sustained overloads like a crusher or extruder. The integrated EMC filter meets IEC 61800-3 category C3 for 50 m of motor cable — enough for most industrial runs without an external filter.
Safety function and compliance package
The drive carries CE marking and complies with UL 508C, IEC 61800-3 (environments 1 and 2, categories C2 and C3), IEC 61800-5-1, IEC 61000-3-12, IEC 60721-3, and IEC 61508. EMC immunity covers electrostatic discharge (level 3), radiated RF (level 3), fast transients (level 4), surge (level 3), and conducted RF (level 3) per IEC 61000-4-2 through -6. Total harmonic current distortion is below 48 % at full load per IEC 61000-3-12.
I/O complement and fieldbus slot architecture
Eight discrete inputs are on board, with DI7 and DI8 programmable as pulse inputs up to 30 kHz — useful for encoder or flowmeter feedback without an add-on card. The drive includes an adjustable PID regulator, so closed-loop process control (pressure, flow, level) can run locally without a PLC. Slot A accepts communication modules for Profibus DP V1, PROFINET, DeviceNet, Modbus TCP/EtherNet/IP, CANopen (daisy chain RJ45, SUB-D 9, or screw terminals), Ethernet IP/Modbus TCP/MD-Link, BACnet MS/TP, or Ethernet Powerlink. Slot A/B also accepts digital/analog I/O extension and output relay modules. Built-in communication ports include Modbus serial and Ethernet Modbus TCP, so basic networking is ready out of the box. The drive targets asynchronous and synchronous motors for process and utilities applications — think pumps, fans, compressors, and conveyors in water, HVAC, or material handling.
Wall-mount only, vertical within ±10 degrees. The IP00 base rating means it needs an enclosure — the IP21 kit (VW3A9113) is available for environments where drip protection is required. Forced convection cooling moves 1260 m³/h of air; the noise level at full fan speed is 76 dB. Operating altitude is 1000-3000 m with a 1 % current derating per 100 m above 1000 m. Shock resistance is 15 gn for 11 ms, and vibration tolerance is 1.5 mm peak-to-peak at 2-13 Hz and 1 gn at 13-200 Hz per IEC 60068-2-6. Relative humidity range is 5-95 % without condensation per IEC 60068-2-3. The operating temperature range and derating curve are in the product manual — the forced-convection design means clearance around the drive for airflow is non-negotiable in the panel layout.
