What the 31.7 A continuous output means for your motor load
The ATV630D15N4 delivers 31.7 A continuous at 4 kHz carrier in normal duty, enough to run a 15 kW (20 hp) induction motor on a pump or fan curve. In heavy-duty applications — conveyors or positive-displacement loads — the same drive outputs 23.5 A at 4 kHz, matching an 11 kW (15 hp) motor. The carrier frequency is adjustable; raising it above 4 kHz derates the continuous current, so the 31.7 A figure is the ceiling for thermal design. Output frequency spans 0.1 to 500 Hz, covering both standard 50/60 Hz induction motors and high-speed synchronous motors up to 30000 rpm equivalent. The adjustable PID regulator on board means closed-loop process control — pressure, flow, or level — without an external controller.
Safety and EMC integration — STO SIL 3 and built-in filter
This removes the motor torque without disconnecting the power wiring — no external safety relay needed for the stop function. The drive also carries UL 508C listing and overvoltage category III, meaning it withstands distribution-level surges on a 480 V panel. The internal EMC filter supports 50 m shielded motor cable at C2 limits (environment 1, category C2) and 150 m at C3 limits (environment 2, category C3). For most industrial installations, this eliminates the need for an external input filter. Total harmonic current distortion (THDI) stays below 48 % from 80 to 100 % load, compliant with IEC 61000-3-12.
Fieldbus options and I/O complement
Slot A accepts plug-in communication modules for Profibus DP V1, PROFINET, DeviceNet, Modbus TCP/EtherNet/IP, CANopen (RJ45 or SUB-D 9 or screw terminals), Ethernet Powerlink, or BACnet MS/TP. The drive ships with Ethernet, Modbus serial, and Modbus TCP onboard — no extra module for basic networked control. Eight discrete inputs are standard, with DI7 and DI8 programmable as pulse inputs up to 30 kHz — usable for encoder or flowmeter feedback. Slot A and slot B also accept digital/analog I/O extension modules and output relay extension modules if the onboard I/O count is insufficient.
Mounting, cooling, and environmental limits
Wall-mount only, vertical within ±10 degrees. Forced convection cooling moves 215 m³/h of air — the heatsink needs clearance on both sides for airflow. IP21 protection means indoor installation only; no washdown rating. Operating altitude up to 1000 m without derating, then 1 % current derating per 100 m up to 4800 m. Vibration resistance is 1.5 mm peak-to-peak at 2–13 Hz and 1 gn at 13–200 Hz per IEC 60068-2-6. Shock resistance 15 gn for 11 ms per IEC 60068-2-27. Ambient humidity 5–95 % non-condensing, pollution degree 2 — typical for a clean industrial control room.
