The ATV630D18N4US is a standard version variable speed drive from the Altivar Process ATV600 range, designed for asynchronous and synchronous motors in process and utility applications. It accepts a 380…480 V supply at 50/60 Hz and delivers 39.2 A nominal output current, enough for an 18.5 kW motor under normal duty or 15 kW under heavy duty. The 25 hp normal-duty / 20 hp heavy-duty rating gives a clear line: if your load profile demands sustained torque at low speed, size against the heavy-duty column. Line current draw varies by supply voltage and duty: 33.4 A at 380 V normal duty, 28.9 A at 480 V normal duty, and 27.7 A / 24.4 A for heavy duty at the same voltages. That spread matters for branch-circuit sizing — the 480 V normal-duty figure is the one to use for most US installations. The drive includes an integrated EMC filter rated for 164 ft (50 m) motor cable at category C2 and 492 ft (150 m) at category C3 per IEC 61800-3. For a standard industrial environment (second environment, category C3), you can run 150 m of shielded cable without an external filter. The first environment / category C2 limit of 50 m covers light-industrial or residential settings.
Safety and compliance
Safe Torque Off (STO) is built in at SIL 3 per IEC 61508 and EN 13849-1, which means the drive can be integrated into a safety circuit without an external contactor for the power removal function. The safety CPU path is separate from the motion control path — wire the STO inputs to your safety relay or PLC, and the drive will inhibit power to the motor within the rated response time. The drive carries CE marking and complies with UL 508C, IEC 61800-3, IEC 61800-5-1, IEC 61000-3-12, IEC 60721-3, IEC 61508, and IEC 13849-1. The IP21 rating (IEC 60529) and UL type 1 enclosure mean it is suitable for clean, dry indoor environments — no washdown or dust protection. TAA, BAA, and BABA compliance via COTS is confirmed — relevant for US federal or defense-funded projects that require Trade Agreements Act compliant goods.
Fieldbus and I/O
Slot A accepts a wide range of communication option cards: Profibus DP V1, PROFINET, DeviceNet, Modbus TCP/EtherNet/IP, CANopen (RJ45, SUB-D 9, or screw terminals), Ethernet IP/Modbus TCP/MD-Link, BACnet MS/TP, and Ethernet Powerlink. The base unit also includes onboard Modbus TCP, Modbus serial, and Ethernet ports — so for many applications you can skip the option card entirely. Eight discrete inputs are standard, with DI7 and DI8 programmable as pulse inputs up to 30 kHz, 24 V DC, 1 MOhm impedance, with 500 V DC isolation to earth for 1 minute. Slot A and Slot B also accept digital/analog I/O extension modules and output relay extension modules if you need more points. An adjustable PID regulator is built into the control loop — no external controller needed for closed-loop process control (pressure, flow, level).
Same part, different passport — this is the US-suffixed variant (ATV630D18N4US) with UL listing and TAA compliance, distinct from the non-US ATV630D18N4. If your project requires UL 508C or TAA, verify the suffix; a standard ATV630D18N4 won't carry those marks.
Wall-mount only; operating position vertical within ±10 degrees. Forced convection cooling moves 215 m³/h (56798 Gal/hr) of air — ensure clearance around the heatsink per the installation manual. Noise level is 59.5 dB, which is moderate for a drive of this power class; not silent, but not objectionable in a machine room. Relative humidity 5…95 % non-condensing. Shock rated at 15 gn for 11 ms (IEC 60068-2-27); vibration rated at 1.5 mm peak-to-peak from 2…13 Hz and 1 gn from 13…200 Hz (IEC 60068-2-6). These are standard industrial figures — the drive will survive shipping and normal floor vibration.
