The Schneider ATV630D55M3US is a variable speed drive in the Altivar Process ATV600 range, sized for 55 kW normal duty or 45 kW heavy duty motor loads on a 200-240 V supply. It delivers 211 A continuous at 2.5 kHz in normal duty and 176 A in heavy duty—figures that tell you where the drive lives on the load curve. For a 60 hp motor in normal duty or 45 kW in heavy, that's the spec to write into the BOM.
Normal duty (211 A) handles pumps, fans, compressors with steady torque; heavy duty (176 A, 45 kW) takes the shaft hits of conveyors, mixers, or crushers starting under load. The drive ships IP00—fine inside a cabinet, but if you're mounting it in the open (warm chiller room, dirty saw shed), order the IP21 kit VW3A9704. No EMC filter on board, so if the line has strict emission limits, plan an external filter before commissioning. Cooling is forced convection pulling 600 m³/h; keep space around the heatsink. The drive tolerates altitude to 4800 m with derating—1 % per 100 m above 1000 m—so no surprises on a high-plains installation. Vibration rating of 1 gn (13-200 Hz) means it's happy on a machine frame, not just a control-room wall. STO is built in to SIL 3—no separate safety relay needed for coordinated stop. Pulse inputs on DI7 and DI8 handle encoders up to 30 kHz, handy for speed feedback without an add-on card.
Integration and comms
Base unit gives you Modbus TCP and Modbus serial. Slot A accepts Profibus DP V1, PROFINET, DeviceNet, CANopen, EtherNet/IP, BACnet MS/TP, or Ethernet Powerlink—pick the card that matches your PLC. I/O extension and relay modules also ride in slot A or B. For a new line, the Modbus TCP onboard is usually enough; for a Profibus retrofit, add the option card and you're in. Output frequency goes from 0.1 to 500 Hz—covers standard induction motors and higher-speed spindles. The THDI stays under 48 % at full load, which helps pass the IEC 61000-3-12 harmonic check without a line reactor on smaller plants.
CE marked. Standards include UL 508C, IEC 61800-3 categories C2 and C3, IEC 61800-5-1, IEC 61508, IEC 13849-1.
