Active production — what that means for a BOM line
The ATV630U40N4US: It carries CE marking and complies with UL 508C, IEC 61800-3, and EN/IEC 61800-3 environment categories C2 and C3, so it meets the regulatory documentation requirements for most industrial installations in North America and Europe.
Rated output and duty selection
The drive delivers 9.3 A continuous output at 4 kHz switching frequency in normal duty, and 7.2 A at 4 kHz in heavy duty. Normal duty corresponds to 4 kW motor power (5 hp); heavy duty to 3 kW (4 hp). The heavy-duty rating is the one to use for constant-torque loads like conveyors or extruders where the motor pulls rated current across the speed range. Line current draw is 7.6 A at 380 V normal duty, 6.7 A at 480 V normal duty, and 6 A / 5.4 A respectively in heavy duty. This is the figure for sizing the input fusing and contactor — the 480 V heavy-duty number (5.4 A) is the lowest and governs the minimum branch-circuit rating. Total harmonic current distortion (THDi) is below 48 % at full load per IEC 61000-3-12, which means the integrated EMC filter handles the line-side harmonics well enough to avoid nuisance tripping of upstream protection in most installations.
Safety, EMC, and environmental fit
This eliminates the need for an external safety relay on the power removal path — the drive itself can be wired into a safety circuit that removes torque without disconnecting the mains. The integrated EMC filter is rated for Category C2 at 50 m cable length and Category C3 at 150 m. For a machine builder shipping into Europe, the C2 rating at 50 m covers most cabinet-to-motor runs without an external output filter. For a drive installed at 2000 m, budget 10 % derating on the continuous output current.
Communication and I/O expansion
The drive ships with Ethernet, Modbus serial, and Modbus TCP as standard communication ports. Slot A accepts optional fieldbus modules for Profibus DP V1, PROFINET, DeviceNet, Modbus TCP/EtherNet/IP, CANopen (RJ45, SUB-D 9, or screw terminals), BACnet MS/TP, or Ethernet Powerlink. Eight discrete inputs are on board, with DI7 and DI8 programmable as pulse inputs up to 30 kHz. Slot A and Slot B also accept digital/analog I/O extension modules and output relay extension modules, so the I/O count can be expanded without a separate remote I/O rack.
