Floor-standing process drive with integrated disconnect
The ATV650C25N4F is a floor-standing variable speed drive from the Altivar Process ATV600 series, rated for 250 kW normal duty and 200 kW heavy duty on asynchronous or synchronous motors. It delivers a continuous output current of 477 A at 2.5 kHz for normal duty and 370 A at 2.5 kHz for heavy duty, with a nominal output current of 477 A. The integrated disconnect switch (variant) means this unit arrives with a built-in load-break switch on the line side — one less component to panel-mount and wire, and a clear isolation point for the drive during maintenance. The IP54 enclosure (conforming to IEC 60529 and IEC 61800-5-1) suits installations where the drive sits in the same room as the motor, not in a separate clean cabinet — think pump houses, water treatment, or conveyor galleries where airborne dust and splash are present.
Output ratings and duty selection
The heavy-duty rating (200 kW at 370 A continuous) is the figure to use for constant-torque loads like conveyors, extruders, or positive-displacement pumps. The normal-duty rating (250 kW at 477 A) applies to variable-torque loads such as centrifugal pumps and fans where the torque demand drops with speed. The line current draw at 400 V is 391 A in heavy duty and 369 A in normal duty; at 380 V it is 453 A heavy duty and 319 A normal duty — these numbers drive the upstream breaker and cable sizing. The output frequency range spans 0.1 to 500 Hz, covering both standard induction motors and high-speed spindle applications. The integrated EMC filter is rated for 150 m of motor cable in category C3 per IEC 61800-3, which is typical for industrial environments where the drive is not on a residential or public low-voltage supply. Total harmonic current distortion (THDI) stays below 48% at full load per IEC 61000-3-12.
Safety, environment, and fieldbus flexibility
Safe Torque Off (STO) is built in at SIL 3 per IEC 61800-5-2 — no separate safety relay needed for the stop function on a guarding circuit. The drive also carries an adjustable PID regulator for closed-loop process control (pressure, flow, level) without an external controller. Slot A accepts a range of communication modules: PROFINET, DeviceNet, Modbus TCP/EtherNet/IP, CANopen (daisy chain RJ45, SUB-D 9, or screw terminals), Ethernet IP/Modbus TCP/MD-Link, BACnet MS/TP, Ethernet Powerlink, and Profibus DP V1. Slots A and B also accept digital/analog I/O extension modules and output relay extension modules. The onboard Modbus TCP port is standard. Operating temperature is -15 to 40 °C without derating, and up to 50 °C with derating. Altitude derating starts at 1000 m — 1% current derating per 100 m above that. The forced-convection cooling moves 1300 m³/h of air, so the installation space must allow free intake and exhaust; the vertical operating position (±10°) is mandatory for proper airflow through the heatsink.
