18.5 kW normal duty, 15 kW heavy duty — what that means for the load
The ATV650D18N4E delivers 18.5 kW (25 hp) in normal duty and 15 kW (20 hp) in heavy duty, both at 380-480 V supply. Continuous output current is 39.2 A at 4 kHz for normal duty and 31.7 A at 4 kHz for heavy duty. The switching frequency is locked at 4 kHz for the full current rating — raising the carrier to quiet motor whine derates the output, so budget the thermal margin if you need a quieter installation. Line current draw at 480 V is 28.9 A in normal duty and 24.4 A in heavy duty. At 380 V the line current rises to 33.4 A normal and 27.7 A heavy — the branch circuit and upstream protection need to be sized for the 380 V case if the site runs at that voltage.
Built-in disconnect switch and IP55 — panel integration notes
This variant ships with an integrated disconnect switch, so the drive can be isolated locally for maintenance without an external disconnecting means in the line. The IP55 enclosure (per IEC 60529 and IEC 61800-5-1) means it handles hose-down and dust — suitable for standalone wall mounting in washdown areas without a separate cabinet. Mounting is wall-mount with the operating position vertical ±10 degrees. Forced convection cooling keeps the electronics within limits; the noise level is 53.7 dB, which is audible in a quiet control room but unremarkable on a plant floor. Ambient temperature range is -15 to 40 °C without derating, and up to 50 °C with derating. Above 1000 m altitude, derate 1 % per 100 m up to 4800 m — factor this into the installation if the drive sits at elevation.
EMC filter and cable length — the C2/C3 split
The integrated EMC filter meets IEC 61800-3 category C2 with up to 50 m of motor cable, and category C3 with up to 150 m. C2 is the stricter conducted emission limit for first-environment (residential) installations; C3 is for second-environment (industrial) only. If the drive feeds a motor 50 m away in a mixed-use building, the C2 compliance holds — beyond that the installation becomes C3 and may need an external filter. Total harmonic current distortion (THDI) is below 48 % from 80-100 % load per IEC 61000-3-12, which keeps the drive within the grid connection limits for most industrial supplies without an external line reactor.
STO SIL 3 and fieldbus options
This means the drive removes torque from the motor without a separate safety contactor — the safety function is wired directly to the STO terminals and validated during commissioning. No external safety relay needed for the torque removal function. Slot A accepts communication modules for PROFINET, DeviceNet, Modbus TCP/EtherNet/IP, CANopen (daisy chain RJ45, SUB-D 9, or screw terminals), Profibus DP V1, Ethernet Powerlink, and BACnet MS/TP. Slots A and B also accept digital/analog I/O extension or output relay modules. The base drive includes Modbus serial and Ethernet ports. Eight discrete inputs are provided, with DI7 and DI8 programmable as pulse inputs up to 30 kHz. The adjustable PID regulator handles closed-loop process control without an external controller.
