Process drive with integrated disconnect
The ATV650D45N4E is a 45 kW normal-duty / 37 kW heavy-duty variable speed drive from the Altivar Process ATV600 family, built for pump, fan, compressor, and conveyor applications in water, HVAC, and light industrial settings. It ships with a factory-integrated disconnect switch, which means the drive can be locked out for maintenance without an external isolator — a time-saver on panel builds and a clear safety upgrade for the line-side electrician.
Output current and duty ratings at 4 kHz carrier
Continuous output current is 87 A at 4 kHz for normal duty and 72 A at 4 kHz for heavy duty. The 4 kHz carrier is the default; raising it quiets motor whine but derates the available current — the 87 A figure is the ceiling for sizing the motor cable and the upstream protection. Line current draw ranges from 59 A (heavy duty at 480 V) to 79.8 A (normal duty at 380 V). That spread matters when sizing the feeder breaker and the incoming cable — the 380 V case pulls the higher amps, so the branch circuit should be rated for the normal-duty 380 V figure. Rated supply voltage is 380-480 V, 50/60 Hz. The drive handles the full range without a tap change, which simplifies stocking for plants with mixed line voltages.
IP55 enclosure and environmental tolerance
IP55 per IEC 60529 and IEC 61800-5-1 means the enclosure is dust-protected and can handle water jets from any direction — suitable for washdown areas, outdoor installations under a roof, or floor-mount near process equipment. Operating temperature range is -15 to 40 °C without derating, extending to 50 °C with a derating factor. The forced-convection cooling needs clearance around the heatsink; wall-mount orientation vertical ±10° is the only approved position. Altitude derating starts above 1000 m: 1 % current reduction per 100 m up to 4800 m. For a plant at 2000 m elevation, budget a 10 % current headroom on the motor side.
Safety, EMC, and fieldbus options
STO (Safe Torque Off) is integrated at SIL 3 per IEC 61508 and PL e per ISO 13849-1. No external safety relay needed for the stop function — the drive accepts the safety signal directly on its control terminals. The integrated EMC filter supports 50 m of motor cable at Category C2 and 150 m at Category C3. For a CE-marked installation with a long motor run, the C3 limit is the one to design to. Slot A accepts fieldbus option cards: PROFINET, DeviceNet, Modbus TCP/EtherNet/IP, CANopen (daisy chain RJ45, SUB-D 9, or screw terminals), Profibus DP V1, Ethernet Powerlink, and BACnet MS/TP. Slot A and Slot B also accept digital/analog I/O extension and output relay extension modules.
