90 kW process drive with IP55 and embedded safety
The ATV650D90N4 is a 90 kW normal duty / 75 kW heavy duty variable speed drive from the Altivar Process ATV600 series, designed for asynchronous and synchronous motor control in process and utilities applications. Rated supply voltage is 380-480 V, with a continuous output current of 173 A at 2.5 kHz for normal duty and 106 A at 2.5 kHz for heavy duty — the heavy duty figure governs the safe continuous current for constant-torque loads like conveyors or extruders. The IP55 enclosure (per IEC 60529 and IEC 61800-5-1) means the drive withstands hose-directed water and dust ingress — it mounts directly on the wall in washdown areas without needing a separate cabinet.
Safety, EMC, and fieldbus integration
Integrated STO (safe torque off) rated SIL 3 eliminates the need for an external safety relay on the power removal path — the drive itself confirms the torque-off state to the safety PLC. The built-in EMC filter meets IEC 61800-3 category C3 with 150 m of motor cable, covering most industrial installations without an external filter. Slot A accepts communication modules for PROFINET, DeviceNet, Modbus TCP/EtherNet/IP, CANopen, Profibus DP V1, or Ethernet Powerlink — the drive ships with Modbus TCP and Modbus serial embedded. Eight digital inputs (DI7, DI8 programmable as pulse inputs up to 30 kHz) and an adjustable PID regulator mean the drive handles closed-loop process control directly, without a separate controller for simple pressure or flow loops.
Line current, derating, and installation constraints
Line current draw varies by duty: 156.2 A at 380 V normal duty, 112.7 A at 480 V normal duty; 98.9 A at 380 V heavy duty, 86.9 A at 480 V heavy duty — size the upstream protection and cable for the normal duty figure if the load profile allows occasional overload. Above 1000 m altitude, derate output current 1 % per 100 m up to 4800 m. Operating temperature range is -15 to 40 °C without derating, 40 to 50 °C with derating — the forced convection cooling (69.9 dB noise level) assumes vertical mounting within ±10°.
Compliance documentation covers IEC 61800-3 (EMC), IEC 61800-5-1 (safety), UL 508C, IEC 61508 (functional safety), and IEC 13849-1 — the CE marking covers the EU regulatory requirements for industrial drives.
