280 kW at 500 V — normal-duty and heavy-duty ratings
The ATV6A0C40N6 is a modular cabinet-mount AC drive from the Altivar Process ATV600 series, rated 280 kW at 500 V in normal duty and 220 kW at 500 V in heavy duty. The normal-duty line current is 380 A at 500 V; heavy-duty line current is 303 A at 500 V. Apparent power is 329 kVA at 500 V normal duty, 262 kVA at 500 V heavy duty. These are the numbers that govern transformer sizing, cable cross-section, and upstream breaker coordination — the heavy-duty figure is the one that holds the unit on the grid under a sustained overload. Switching frequency is adjustable from 2 to 4.9 kHz with a derating factor — raising it quiets the motor whine but reduces the continuous output current. The drive is designed for both asynchronous and synchronous motors, with braking to standstill by DC injection.
STO SIL 3 and integrated protection suite
The drive also provides thermal protection for both motor and drive, motor phase break detection, overcurrent between output phases and earth, short-circuit protection, overvoltages on the DC bus, line supply over/undervoltage, phase loss, and overspeed protection. That list covers the fault conditions a site electrical engineer needs to map into the protection logic without adding external relays. The integrated EMC filter is rated for 300 m cable at category C3 per IEC 61800-3 — suitable for industrial environments with a dedicated transformer, not for residential or public low-voltage networks. The prospective line short-circuit current is 50 kA, so the upstream protective device must be coordinated to that SCCR level.
Modular construction and fieldbus flexibility
This is the modular version — the kit ships as a control unit, mechanical mounting kits, power connection set of fuses, one 200 kW power module, and a front cover. Slot A accepts communication modules for Profibus DP V1, PROFINET, DeviceNet, Modbus TCP/EtherNet/IP, or CANopen (daisy-chain RJ45, SUB-D 9, or screw terminals). Slot A/slot B also accept digital/analog I/O extension and output relay extension modules. The base drive includes a 2-wire RS 485 Modbus serial port with RTU frame, configurable 8-bit data, odd/even/no parity, and addresses 1–247. The Ethernet port runs Modbus TCP at 10/100 Mbit/s with half/full duplex autonegotiation.
Cabinet integration and environmental ratings
Cabinet-mount only — UL type 1 and UL type 12 per UL 61800-5-1 when integrated into a suitable enclosure. Pollution degree 2 per IEC 61800-5-1 (non-conductive pollution only). Operating altitude is below 2000 m with current derating above 1000 m. Vibration resistance is 1.5 mm peak-to-peak at 2–13 Hz and 0.5 gn at 13–200 Hz per IEC 60068-2-6; shock resistance is 4 gn for 11 ms per IEC 60068-2-27. Relative humidity range is 5–95% without condensation per IEC 60068-2-3. Noise level is 70 dB per 86/188/EEC.
