The Schneider Electric ATV6A0C45T4 is a modular Altivar Process ATV600 variable speed drive rated for 650 hp normal duty and 550 hp heavy duty at 480 V, drawing 685 A normal duty line current. It holds strip tension under the radiant heat of a hot-strip mill because it pairs forced convection cooling with an integrated EMC filter rated for 300 m cable at IEC 61800-3 category C3, keeping drive EMI off the mill control network.
The normal-duty / heavy-duty split dictates the operating margin for continuous process vs. overload cycles. At 480 V, heavy duty gives you 586 A and 355 kW for constant-torque loads like a conveyor or mill table; normal duty gives 685 A and 450 kW for variable-torque pumps or fans. The integrated STO function is rated SIL 3 per IEC 61508 and IEC 13849-1, so it can serve as the single-channel safety isolation on the motor without an external safety relay — provided the 24 V DC supply to the STO inputs stays within 21…27 V and is short-circuit protected. The control supply architecture needs a separate 24 V DC source for the digital inputs (19…30 V) and a regulated 10.5 V DC for a reference potentiometer (1 to 10 kOhm). The internal supply for digital inputs and STO is a separate 24 V DC rail with <200 mA overload and short-circuit protection, which means a fault on an input won't drop the STO line. Accuracy across three analog inputs stays within ±0.6 % over a 60 °C temperature swing, and ±0.15 % linearity error on the maximum value — enough to hold repeatable tension reference without recalibrating between shifts.
Cabinet-mount, forced convection cooling. Pollution degree 2 per IEC 61800-5-1 (non-conductive dust, occasional condensation). Operating altitude: 1000 m base, derate 1 % per 100 m up to 4800 m. Shock resistance 7 gn at 11 ms — survives the mechanical bumps of a mill floor. Three configurable relay outputs (1 NO/NC fault relay, 2 NO sequence relays) rated for 100,000 cycles, enough for decades of fault signaling in a 20-year plant life. Option card slots A and B accept communication modules (Profibus DP V1, PROFINET, DeviceNet, Modbus TCP/EtherNet/IP, CANopen) and I/O extension modules. The embedded Ethernet/Modbus TCP port runs at 10/100 Mbit/s, half/full duplex with autonegotiation. A separate RS-485 serial port at 4.8 to 38.4 kbit/s uses RTU frames for legacy Modbus daisy chains.
