Sizing this drive for the load
The ATV6A0C80Q4 is an Altivar Process ATV600 modular drive rated 800 kW at 400 V in normal duty and 630 kW in heavy duty, with a corresponding apparent power of 925 kVA at normal duty and 735 kVA at heavy duty — the heavy-duty figure governs continuous operation on a centrifugal pump or fan where the load torque follows the square of speed, while the normal-duty figure applies to variable-torque loads that rarely hit full current. Line current at 400 V is 1335 A normal duty and 1061 A heavy duty — this sets the input fuse and cable cross-section; the integrated EMC filter is rated for 300 m of motor cable per IEC 61800-3 category C3, so any cable run beyond that needs an output reactor or sine filter to keep conducted emissions within the C3 limit.
Safety circuit integration with STO SIL 3
The six discrete inputs DI1...DI6 are programmable and include two (DI5, DI6) configurable as pulse inputs up to 30 kHz for encoder or flowmeter feedback; the sampling time on DI1...DI4 is 2 ms ± 0.5 ms, which is fast enough for basic speed reference changes but not for high-speed registration — that loop belongs on a dedicated motion controller.
Fieldbus and I/O expansion slots
Slot A accepts communication modules for Profibus DP V1, PROFINET, DeviceNet, Modbus TCP/EtherNet/IP, or CANopen (daisy chain RJ45, SUB-D 9, or screw terminals); slots A and B also accept digital/analog I/O extension and output relay extension modules — the drive ships with a control unit that includes three configurable relay outputs (R1 fault relay NO/NC, R2 and R3 sequence relays NO) each rated for 100,000 electrical cycles. The embedded Ethernet port supports half-duplex, full-duplex, and autonegotiation at 10/100 Mbit/s for Modbus TCP; the serial port is 2-wire RS485 with configurable 8-bit data, odd/even/no parity, and baud rates from 4.8 to 38.4 kbit/s in RTU frame format.
Environmental limits and derating
The drive is cabinet-mount with forced convection cooling — the fan needs clearance for airflow, and the 74 dB noise level per 86/188/EEC means the drive will be audible in a quiet control room; pollution degree 2 per IEC 61800-5-1 limits the environment to non-conductive pollution only, so no condensation or conductive dust is allowed without a higher-rated enclosure. Operating altitude is 1000 to 4800 m with a derating of 1 % per 100 m above 1000 m; relative humidity range is 5 to 95 % without condensation per IEC 60068-2-3, and shock resistance is 7 gn for 11 ms per IEC 60068-2-27 — this holds for shipping and installation shocks, not continuous vibration on a crusher or mill.
Procurement and lifecycle status
The kit composition includes one control unit, mechanical mounting kits, power connection set, set of fuses, five 160 kW power modules, and four front covers — this is a modular drive where the power modules are paralleled internally to reach the 800 kW rating, so a single module failure does not take the whole drive offline provided the remaining modules can carry the reduced load.
