Sizing the drive to the load
The ATV6A0M10N6: This drive is rated for 710 kW at 500 V in normal duty (110 % overload for 60 s) and 560 kW in heavy duty (150 % overload for 60 s). The line current at 500 V is 954 A for normal duty, 758 A for heavy duty. The apparent power works out to 826 kVA and 656 kVA respectively. That's a big cabinet-mount drive — plan the incoming cable and fuse sizing around the 954 A figure for normal duty applications. It handles both asynchronous and synchronous motors. The output voltage tracks the supply voltage, so no step-up transformer needed if the line is at 500 V. Switching frequency is adjustable from 2 to 4.9 kHz with a derating factor — running at the higher end quiets motor whine but reduces continuous output current. Factor that into the thermal design of the panel.
Safety and compliance — the integrated STO matters
That means you can wire the STO terminals directly into the safety circuit without an external safety relay for many applications — saves panel space and wiring time. The drive also includes thermal protection for both motor and drive, phase loss detection, overcurrent, short-circuit, and DC bus overvoltage monitoring. The integrated EMC filter meets IEC 61800-3 category C3, rated for 300 m of motor cable. That covers most industrial installations without an external filter. The prospective line Isc is 50 kA — the drive can be installed on a supply with up to 50 kA available fault current. CE marked, pollution degree 2 per IEC 61800-5-1. The protection degree is UL type 1 or type 12 when integrated into a cabinet — the drive itself is not rated for standalone wet-area installation.
Communication and I/O expansion
Comes with dual-port Ethernet/IP and Modbus TCP (10/100 Mbit/s, half/full duplex, auto-negotiation) plus a 2-wire RS-485 Modbus serial port running at 4.8 to 38.4 kbit/s. The Modbus serial supports RTU framing and up to 247 slave addresses. Slot A accepts a wide range of fieldbus option cards: Profibus DP V1, PROFINET, DeviceNet, Modbus TCP/EtherNet/IP, CANopen (RJ45, SUB-D 9, or screw terminals). Slot A and slot B also accept digital/analog I/O extension modules and output relay extension modules. That gives flexibility to match whatever network the plant floor runs.
Cabinet mount only — the drive is not a standalone enclosure. The kit includes the control unit, mechanical mounting hardware, power connection set, fuses, the 200 kW power module, and a front cover. Forced convection cooling, so leave clearance above and below for airflow. Operates at altitudes up to 2000 m with current derating above 1000 m. Ambient temperature range is not explicitly stated in the spec table, but the 5–95 % non-condensing humidity range (IEC 60068-2-3) gives a sense of the environment it tolerates. Vibration resistance is 1.5 mm peak-to-peak at 2–13 Hz, 0.5 gn at 13–200 Hz; shock resistance is 4 gn for 11 ms. Noise level is 74 dB — plan for hearing protection if the drive is in a walk-in panel or near operators.
Power quality and harmonic performance
Total harmonic current distortion (THDi) is less than 48 % at full load per IEC 61000-3-12. That's a standard 6-pulse rectifier figure — if the plant has strict harmonic limits or a weak supply, budget for an external line reactor or active filter. The drive also meets IEC 61800-3 and IEC 61000-3-12 for EMC and harmonic compliance.
