Drive rating and motor match
The ATV930D22M3 is a 22.0 kW normal-duty variable speed drive from the Altivar Process 930 series, delivering 92.6 A continuous output at 4 kHz carrier for normal duty, or 78.4 A at 4 kHz for heavy-duty 18.5 kW applications. Rated supply is 200...240 V 3-phase, making it a low-voltage drive for North American 208/240 VAC line-fed motors — common on conveyor, pump, and fan loads in panel builds.
What the output current means for your load
The 92.6 A nominal output current at 4 kHz sets the thermal limit for continuous motor current. For heavy-duty cycles (crane, extruder, high-start-torque loads), the drive is rated 78.4 A at the same carrier — the 18 % derating reflects the higher sustained current demand under shock load. Raising the carrier frequency above 4 kHz quiets motor whine but derates the continuous current further — budget the thermal budget per the drive's derating curve, not the nameplate. The integrated braking chopper (standard variant) dumps regenerative energy to an external resistor, so the drive handles fast deceleration on high-inertia loads without tripping on DC-bus overvoltage.
Panel fit and environmental tolerance
Wall-mount enclosed design with IP21 and UL Type 1 protection — suitable for indoor, non-washdown environments. The IP21 rating means it resists solid objects >12.5 mm and dripping water, but not hose-down or condensation-prone locations. For a panel at 1500 m elevation, expect a 5 % current reduction from the 92.6 A figure. Vibration tolerance is 1.5 mm peak-to-peak at 2...13 Hz and 1 gn at 13...200 Hz per IEC 60068-2-6 — adequate for floor-mounted panels near rotating machinery but not for direct machine-mount on a vibrating conveyor. Shock resistance rated 15 gn for 11 ms per IEC 60068-2-27 — the drive can survive shipping drops and occasional impacts but not repeated hammering from a press brake.
Communication and I/O expansion
Native protocols include Modbus serial, Modbus TCP, and EtherNet/IP on the base unit. For fieldbus integration into Profibus DP, PROFINET, DeviceNet, EtherCAT, or CANopen networks, the drive accepts plug-in option modules in Slot A. Slot A/B/C accept digital/analog I/O extension modules, output relay modules, and encoder interface modules (digital 5/12 V, analog, or resolver). This lets you add local I/O without a separate remote rack — useful for stand-alone pump or conveyor stations. Transmission rates span 4.8 kbps to 100 Mbits, covering both legacy serial (Modbus serial at 9600/19200 bps) and high-speed Ethernet/IP at 100 Mbits. The autonegotiation on the Ethernet port simplifies commissioning — plug into a managed switch and it sets speed/duplex automatically.
Compliance and standards coverage
Listed to UL 508C (power conversion equipment) and carries CE marking. Standards include IEC 61800-3 (EMC environment), IEC 61800-5-1 (safety), IEC 61000-3-12 (harmonic limits), IEC 61508 (functional safety), and IEC 13849-1 (safety-related parts). Integrated EMC filter meets conducted emission limits for industrial environments; an optional EMC plate is available for higher-performance installations. Pollution degree 2 rating means the drive is designed for normal, non-conductive pollution environments — typical for a clean, climate-controlled panel. Not rated for dusty or conductive atmospheres without additional enclosure.
For MRO spares planning, the drive is part of the Altivar Process 930 family, which shares option modules and accessories across the range. Stocking a common communication module or I/O extension reduces line-down risk for multiple drive sizes.
