Sizing the drive to the motor — normal vs heavy duty
The ATV930D45N4 delivers 45 kW in normal duty and 37 kW in heavy duty at 380-480 V 3-phase input. Normal duty suits variable-torque loads like centrifugal pumps and fans where the drive rarely runs at full current continuously. Heavy duty applies to constant-torque loads — conveyors, extruders, positive-displacement pumps — where the drive must hold rated torque across the speed range without derating. Continuous output current is 88 A at 4 kHz switching frequency for normal duty, dropping to 74.5 A at 4 kHz for heavy duty. The switching frequency can be raised above 4 kHz to quiet motor whine, but each kHz increase above 4 kHz derates the continuous current — budget around 5-8% derate per extra kHz. The 88 A figure sets the minimum cable ampacity and upstream protection sizing.
Built-in braking and harmonic performance
This is the standard version with an integrated braking chopper — no external braking module needed for dynamic braking. The chopper activates when the DC bus voltage exceeds the threshold (typically 390 VDC on a 480 V supply), dumping regenerative energy into an external resistor. The resistor must be sized for the deceleration duty cycle, not just peak power. Total harmonic current distortion (THDI) is below 48% from 80-100% load per IEC 61000-3-12. This means the drive's input rectifier meets the harmonic emission limits for most industrial installations without an external line reactor or active filter — the integrated DC bus choke handles the bulk of the harmonic attenuation. For installations requiring THDI below 10%, an external line reactor or 12-pulse configuration is still needed.
The drive ships with EtherNet/IP, Modbus serial, and Modbus TCP on board — three protocols without an option card. The Ethernet port supports half/full duplex and auto-negotiation at 10/100 Mbits. The serial port runs at 4.8 to 19200 bps with configurable parity. Addressing range is 1-247 on the serial bus. Slot A accepts plug-in communication modules for Profibus DP V1, PROFINET, DeviceNet, EtherCAT, CANopen (daisy-chain RJ45, SUB-D 9, or screw terminals), and Ethernet Powerlink. Slots A/B/C also accept digital/analog I/O extension modules and output relay extension modules. Slot B accepts encoder interface modules (5/12 V digital, analog, or resolver). The control terminals use screw clamps accepting 0.5-1.5 mm² (AWG 20-16). An adjustable PID regulator is built in — no external process controller needed for closed-loop pressure, flow, or level control. The regulator accepts feedback from the analog input or the optional encoder card.
Environmental ratings and installation constraints
It must be installed indoors in a clean, dry environment. Wall-mount only, vertical orientation within ±10 degrees. Ambient temperature range is not explicitly listed in the spec table, but the 63402.4 Gal/hr (240 m³/h) cooling air volume indicates forced-air cooling — ensure clearance around the heatsink per the installation manual. Pollution degree 2 (normally only non-conductive pollution) and overvoltage category III apply. Vibration resistance is 1.5 mm peak-to-peak at 2-13 Hz and 1 gn at 13-200 Hz per IEC 60068-2-6. Shock resistance is 15 gn for 11 ms per IEC 60068-2-27. These ratings cover normal industrial floor vibration — not suitable for direct mounting on a reciprocating compressor or press without vibration isolation.
Compliance and documentation package
The drive carries CE marking and complies with UL 508C (North American industrial control equipment), IEC 61800-3 (EMC for adjustable-speed drives), IEC 61800-5-1 (electrical safety), IEC 61000-3-12 (harmonic limits), IEC 60721-3 (environmental classification), IEC 61508 (functional safety), and IEC 13849-1 (safety-related parts of control systems). The integrated EMC filter meets conducted emission limits for most installations; an optional EMC plate is available for higher attenuation.
