Drive ratings and motor matching
The ATV930U40N4US is a 4.0 kW normal duty / 3.0 kW heavy duty variable speed drive from the Altivar Process ATV900 series, accepting 380-480 V 3-phase input. The nominal output current is 9.3 A at 4 kHz carrier for normal duty; heavy duty continuous output is 7.2 A at the same carrier frequency, meaning the drive can handle a higher overload margin on a smaller motor frame. It drives both asynchronous and synchronous motors, so it covers induction machines and permanent-magnet motors from the same unit — no separate motor type selection required at ordering. The integrated braking chopper (standard on this variant) allows dynamic braking with an external resistor, which is useful for overhauling loads like conveyors or centrifuges where the motor regenerates during deceleration.
Enclosure, environment, and panel fit
Rated IP21 with UL Type 1 enclosure — it is drip-proof but not sealed against hose-down, so it belongs in a clean indoor panel or machine cabinet, not on a washdown line. Mounting is wall-mount vertical within +/-10 degrees, and the cooling fan moves 38 m³/h of air; ensure clearance around the vents per the installation manual. Power and motor terminations accept 2.5-6 mm² (AWG 14-10) screw terminals. Control wiring uses 0.5-1.5 mm² (AWG 20-16) screw terminals — standard for a drive of this size. The DC bus terminals also take the same range, which simplifies bus-sharing wiring in multi-drive cabinets. Operating altitude derating starts at 1000 m: 1% current derating per 100 m above that. At 4800 m the drive still runs but at roughly 62% of rated current — a factor for high-altitude installations like mining or ski-lift drives.
Compliance and standards coverage
This drive carries CE marking and is listed to UL 508C, IEC 61800-3 (EMC environment), IEC 61800-5-1 (safety), IEC 61000-3-12 (harmonic limits), IEC 60721-3 (environmental conditions), IEC 61508 (functional safety), and IEC 13849-1 (safety-related parts of control systems). The integrated EMC filter meets conducted emission limits for most industrial environments without an external filter. Compliant with TAA/BAA requirements for US federal projects (TAA BAA BABA BAA via COTS), which matters for government or defense-adjacent procurement.
Communication and expansion slots
Slot A accepts fieldbus option modules: Profibus DP V1, PROFINET, DeviceNet, EtherCAT, CANopen (daisy-chain RJ45, SUB-D 9, or screw terminals), and Ethernet Powerlink. The drive also has a built-in dual-port Ethernet IP/Modbus TCP interface with auto-negotiation, half/full duplex. Slots A, B, and C can host digital/analog I/O extension modules or output relay extension modules. Slot B also accepts encoder interface modules (5/12 V digital, analog, or resolver) — useful for closed-loop speed or position control on synchronous motors. The internal 24 VDC supply for digital inputs and STO runs at 21-27 V; the separate 10.5 V reference supply powers a 1-10 kOhm potentiometer for speed reference. The external 24 V supply for digital inputs accepts 19-30 V, giving flexibility for different control voltages on site.
Sourced through authorized distribution channels; quoted to order against the BOM quantity. The drive supports a wide range of option modules (communication, I/O, encoder feedback) that are separately ordered but share the same ATV900 platform, so expansion is straightforward without changing the base drive.
