Drive rating and duty selection
The ATV950D55N4 is a 55 kW normal-duty / 45 kW heavy-duty variable speed drive from the Altivar Process ATV900 series, designed for synchronous and asynchronous motors in industrial process applications. Nominal output current is 106 A at 2.5 kHz switching frequency for normal duty; heavy-duty continuous output is 88 A at the same carrier. The 380...480 V three-phase supply range covers common global industrial voltages without a transformer. The integrated braking chopper (standard variant) allows dynamic braking with an external resistor, useful for high-inertia loads or rapid deceleration cycles where DC-bus overvoltage would otherwise trip the drive.
IP55 degree of protection and UL Type 1 enclosure mean the drive can be wall-mounted in locations subject to hose-down or dust, without requiring a separate cabinet in many indoor industrial settings. Operating altitude is 1000...4800 m with a 1 % current derating per 100 m above 1000 m — factor this into the installation if the drive sits at elevation. Ambient relative humidity range is 5...95 % non-condensing. Chemical pollution resistance class 3C3 and dust pollution resistance class 3S3 per IEC 60721-3-3 confirm suitability for corrosive or dusty environments typical in wastewater, mining, or chemical processing.
Control wiring and fieldbus options
Control terminals are screw-type, accepting 0.5...1.5 mm² (AWG 20...16). The drive provides an internal 24 V DC supply for digital inputs and STO (21...27 V), plus a 10.5 V DC reference for an external potentiometer. Three option module slots (A, B, C) accept fieldbus adapters for Profibus DP V1, PROFINET, DeviceNet, EtherCAT, CANopen, Ethernet Powerlink, and Ethernet IP / Modbus TCP. Slot B also supports digital or analog encoder interfaces and resolver feedback. Built-in Modbus serial and Ethernet IP / Modbus TCP ports are standard; the drive auto-negotiates half/full duplex on the Ethernet link. Transmission rates include 10/100 Mbit/s for Ethernet and 9600/19200 bit/s for serial.
Compliance and lifecycle status
The drive carries CE marking and complies with UL 508C, IEC 61800-3 (EMC), IEC 61800-5-1 (safety), IEC 61508, and IEC 13849-1 — covering functional safety up to SIL capability for the STO circuit. Electromagnetic compatibility includes immunity test levels 3 and 4 per IEC 61000-4-2 through -4-6, and total harmonic current distortion (THDI) below 48 % at 80...100 % load per IEC 61000-3-12.
