Drive rating and duty selection
The ATV950D75N4E is a 75.0 kW normal-duty, 55.0 kW heavy-duty variable speed drive from the Altivar Process ATV900 family, sized for 380...480 V three-phase supply. Continuous output current is 145 A at 2.5 kHz for normal duty, 106 A at 2.5 kHz for heavy duty — the heavy-duty figure governs when the motor is sized for constant-torque loads like conveyors or extruders; the normal-duty figure applies to variable-torque loads such as centrifugal pumps and fans. The drive includes a load break switch and a braking chopper as standard, so no external contactor or braking resistor wiring is needed for the chopper circuit itself.
Environmental and installation constraints
IP55 enclosure and UL Type 1 rating permit wall-mount installation in washdown areas or dusty industrial environments without an additional cabinet, though the 69.9 dB noise level should be considered for operator-occupied zones. Operating altitude is 1000 m nominal, derating 1 % per 100 m above that up to 4800 m. Vibration resistance is 1.5 mm peak-to-peak at 2...13 Hz and 1 gn at 13...200 Hz per IEC 60068-2-6; shock resistance is 15 gn for 11 ms per IEC 60068-2-27. The drive must be mounted vertical ±10°.
Control wiring and auxiliary supplies
Control connections use screw terminals accepting 0.5...1.5 mm². The drive provides an internal 24 V DC supply (21...27 V) for digital inputs and STO, plus a separate 10.5 V DC ±5 % supply for a 1 to 10 kOhm reference potentiometer. External digital inputs can also be powered from a 24 V DC (19...30 V) source. Insulation resistance is tested at 1 MOhm, 500 V DC for one minute to earth. Line-side and motor terminals accept up to 95 mm² and 95...120 mm² respectively; DC bus terminals accept 70...120 mm².
Communication and expandability
Native communication ports support Modbus TCP, EtherNet/IP, and Modbus serial at selectable rates from 9600 bit/s to 100 Mbit/s. Slot A accepts fieldbus option modules for Profibus DP V1, PROFINET, DeviceNet, EtherCAT, CANopen (daisy-chain RJ45, SUB-D 9, or screw terminals), or Ethernet Powerlink. Slots A, B, and C accept digital and analog I/O extension modules or output relay extension modules. Slot B also accepts 5/12 V digital encoder, analog encoder, or resolver encoder interface modules. The regulation loop includes an adjustable PID controller. Data format is 8 bits with configurable odd, even, or no parity; exchange mode is half duplex, full duplex, or autonegotiation.
Standards, EMC, and functional safety
The drive carries CE marking and complies with UL 508C, IEC 61800-3 (EMC), IEC 61800-5-1 (safety), IEC 61000-3-12 (harmonic emissions), IEC 60721-3 (environmental), IEC 61508, and IEC 13849-1 (functional safety). The integrated EMC filter with optional EMC plate meets conducted emission limits for industrial environments. Maximum THDI is below 48 % from 80...100 % load per IEC 61000-3-12. EMC immunity includes electrostatic discharge level 3, radiated RF level 3, fast transient level 4, surge level 3, and conducted RF level 3 per the respective IEC 61000-4-X standards. Chemical pollution resistance class 3C3 and dust pollution resistance class 3S3 per IEC 60721-3-3. The drive is suitable for both synchronous and asynchronous motors in industrial process applications.
