The Schneider ATV950U22N4 is an Altivar Process ATV900 series variable speed drive sized for a 2.2 kW motor under normal duty or 1.5 kW under heavy duty, fed from a 380...480 V three-phase supply. It delivers 5.6 A continuous at 4 kHz switching for normal duty, and 4 A at 4 kHz for heavy-duty cycles — the heavy-duty figure is the one that governs for constant-torque loads like conveyors or positive-displacement pumps, where the drive must hold rated torque through the speed range without tripping on overload. The IP55 enclosure and integrated EMC filter mean it can sit in a washdown zone or a dusty panel without a separate cabinet, provided the ambient stays within the 5...95 % RH non-condensing range and the mounting stays vertical within ±10°.
Braking chopper and duty cycle
This variant ships with a braking chopper as standard — that is not an option card you order separately. For a vertical load or a high-inertia roller that needs to decelerate faster than the DC bus can absorb, the chopper dumps regenerated energy into an external resistor. Without it, the drive would trip on overvoltage during a fast stop. The heavy-duty current rating (4 A at 4 kHz) already accounts for the extra thermal stress of repeated deceleration cycles, so you size the motor and the resistor to that figure, not the normal-duty 5.6 A.
Fieldbus and I/O flexibility
The drive ships with Modbus serial, Modbus TCP, and EtherNet/IP on the communication port. If the control network runs PROFINET, EtherCAT, DeviceNet, CANopen, or Ethernet Powerlink, slot A accepts a plug-in communication module — no need to swap the whole drive. Slots A, B, and C also accept digital/analog I/O extension modules and output relay modules; slot B additionally takes encoder interface modules (5/12 V digital, analog, or resolver). That means one ATV950U22N4 can serve as the motion controller for a closed-loop vector application without a separate encoder card bolted to the panel.
Supply and control wiring
Digital inputs and STO require a 24 V DC supply in the 21...27 V range — do not feed them from a nominal 24 V rail that droops below 21 V under load, or the STO circuit may drop out. The drive provides its own 24 V DC (21...27 V) internal supply for those circuits, plus a 10.5 V DC ±5 % reference for a 1 to 10 kΩ potentiometer. Control wiring terminates on screw terminals accepting 0.5...1.5 mm²; power wiring (line, motor, DC bus) takes 4...6 mm². The DC bus terminals are sized for 2.5...6 mm², which is worth noting if you are paralleling multiple drives on a common DC bus.
The drive carries CE marking and complies with UL 508C, IEC 61800-3 (EMC), IEC 61800-5-1 (safety), IEC 61508 and IEC 13849-1 (functional safety), plus IEC 61000-3-12 for harmonic emissions. The integrated EMC filter meets conducted emission limits for the second environment (industrial) without an external filter, provided an EMC plate is fitted. Chemical and dust pollution resistance is rated 3C3 and 3S3 per IEC 60721-3-3, which covers most industrial atmospheres short of direct chemical splash.
