The ATV980C35T4X1 is a variable speed drive from the Altivar Process ATV900 range, specifically the ATV980 regenerative system. It is designed for asynchronous and synchronous motors, delivering regenerative braking capability that recovers energy back to the line rather than dissipating it as heat. This makes it a fit for applications where deceleration cycles are frequent or where energy savings matter — conveyors, cranes, centrifuges, or any overhauling load. Rated for a 480 V three-phase supply, the drive comes in a floor-standing compact enclosure with IP23 protection. It includes a line choke, dv/dt filter choke, main switch, and a graphical operating panel mounted in the enclosure door — so the package arrives as a near-complete drive cabinet, not a bare chassis that needs panel-building around it. Cooling is forced convection, and the unit is rated for operation up to 40 °C without derating, with a derating factor applied between 40 and 50 °C. Above 1000 m altitude, current derating applies at 1 % per 100 m, and the drive supports installations up to 4800 m with appropriate earthing system considerations.
The drive is rated for 480 V +/- 10 % supply and 50/60 Hz +/- 5 % line frequency. That covers the standard global industrial mains — 400 V, 460 V, and 480 V grids — without needing a transformer tap change. The 3-phase input is fixed; single-phase supply is not supported. Pollution degree 2 (non-conductive pollution, occasional condensation) is typical for a clean, dry industrial enclosure — no special conformal coating required for normal environments. Communication is native: EtherNet/IP, Modbus TCP, and Modbus serial are all on board. No option card needed for the most common industrial Ethernet and serial protocols. That folds into any modern PLC or BMS without a gateway hack.
Installation and environmental notes
Mount the enclosure vertically within +/- 10 degrees. Clearance for forced convection airflow is required — the drive relies on a fan, not passive convection, so side and top gaps per the installation manual must be respected. Not suitable for washdown areas or outdoor exposure without additional shelter. Environmental resistance is rated 3C3 (chemical), 3S3 (dust), and 3K3 (humidity) per IEC 60721-3-3. That covers most industrial indoor environments with moderate pollution and condensation cycles.
The drive carries CE marking and complies with IEC 61800-3 (EMC for adjustable-speed drives), IEC 60204-1 (safety of machinery), IEC 61800-2 (rating and performance), and IEC 61800-5-1 (electrical safety). EMC immunity is tested to level 3 for electrostatic discharge, radiated RF, conducted RF, and surge, and level 4 for fast transients. Vibration resistance is rated 3M3 per IEC 60721-3-3, with 1.5 mm peak-to-peak at 3-20 Hz and 0.6 gn at 10-200 Hz. Shock resistance is 4 gn for 11 ms. These ratings are typical for floor-mounted industrial drives in most factory environments.
