The ATV980C63Q4X1 is a regenerative variable speed drive from the Altivar Process ATV900 family, rated for 630 to 500 kW on a 380–415 V three-phase supply. It ships in a floor-standing compact enclosure (IP23) with the main switch, line choke, dv/dt filter choke, and a graphical operating panel already integrated — essentially a pre-wired drive cabinet, not a bare chassis. Built for asynchronous and synchronous motors, it complies with IEC 61800-3 (EMC), IEC 61800-5-1 (safety), IEC 60204-1 (machinery), and IEC 61800-2 (power drive systems). Total harmonic current distortion stays under 5 % at full load per IEEE 519, which means it meets utility-grade harmonic limits without external filtering on most installations.
Supply voltage is 380–415 V three-phase, -10 % / +6 %. That covers the common 400 V industrial grid across Europe and much of Asia. The 50/60 Hz ±5 % input frequency means it works on either standard without reconfiguration. Forced-convection cooling keeps the interior clear of fan filters that would need regular replacement. Altitude derating is explicit: full rated current up to 1000 m, then 1 % per 100 m up to 4800 m, with earthing system restrictions above 2000 m (TT, TN, IT). If the installation is above 1000 m, factor the derating into the motor sizing.
Communications and environmental robustness
Onboard communication includes Modbus TCP, Modbus serial, and EtherNet/IP — no option card needed for these three protocols. That covers most PLC ecosystems (Schneider, Rockwell, Siemens via gateway) without extra hardware. Environmental classification is 3C3 (chemical), 3S3 (dust), and 3K3 (humidity) per IEC 60721-3-3, with 5–95 % relative humidity without condensation. Vibration resistance meets 3M3, shock resistance 3M2 (4 g for 11 ms). Storage temperature range is -25 to 70 °C; operating range is 0 to 40 °C without derating, 40 to 50 °C with derating.
