Duty ratings and load fit
The ATV9B0C31R4 is the 315 kW normal duty / 250 kW heavy duty member of the Altivar Process ATV900 family, rated at 440 V. Normal duty delivers 446 A line current; heavy duty drops to 354 A. Both duty cycles also have regenerative-mode ratings — 383.1 A and 304 A respectively — so the drive handles overhauling loads (cranes, centrifuges, downhill conveyors) without an external braking chopper. Apparent power tracks the duty: 340 kVA normal, 270 kVA heavy, and slightly lower in regenerative mode. The switching frequency is adjustable from 2.5 to 8 kHz; above 4 kHz you'll need to derate output current per the drive's thermal model.
Safety and protection envelope
The protection suite covers motor and drive thermal, phase loss, overcurrent, earth fault, DC bus overvoltage, line supply over/undervoltage, overspeed, and control circuit break. Pollution degree 2 per IEC 61800-5-1 suits controlled environments (clean, non-conductive dust). The IP00 chassis requires an IP21 or IP54 cabinet for washdown or outdoor placement.
Fieldbus and I/O expansion
Three option slots (A, B, C) accept communication modules for Profibus DP V1, PROFINET, DeviceNet, CANopen (RJ45, SUB-D 9, or screw terminals), EtherCAT, and Ethernet IP/Modbus TCP. Slot A also takes digital/analog I/O extension or output relay modules; slot B accepts encoder interfaces (5/12 V digital, analog, or resolver). Built-in Ethernet ports (two RJ45 for Ethernet IP/Modbus TCP, one RJ45 for Modbus serial) and a 2-wire RS-485 physical layer for Modbus serial at 4.8 to 38.4 kbit/s. The integrated EMC filter meets IEC 61800-3 category C3 with 300 m of motor cable.
