The Schneider Electric C40S4 is a ComPacT NSX400S basic frame — a 4-pole, fixed-mount molded-case switch rated 400 A at 40 °C, without an integral trip unit. It is the structural carrier onto which you install a separate trip module (electronic or Micrologic) and any auxiliary blocks. Per the datasheet, it is listed as a basic frame, protection type without protection, meaning the overcurrent and short-circuit sensing elements are not included in this order code.
Breaking capacity — what the S code means for your fault level
The breaking capacity code is S, delivering 100 kA Icu at 380/415 V AC 50/60 Hz per IEC 60947-2. At 220/240 V it rises to 120 kA Icu; at 525 V it drops to 40 kA Icu; at 660/690 V it holds 25 kA Icu.
Physical integration — mounting, dimensions, and panel fit
Fixed-mount on a backplate, 255 mm high by 185 mm wide by 110 mm deep. Connection pitch is 45 mm, neutral position left. Front-connect both upside and downside. IP40 front face, IK07 impact rating. The toggle control is manual; no motor operator included.
Durability and environmental range
Mechanical durability is 15,000 cycles per IEC 60947-2. Electrical durability varies by load: 12,000 cycles at 440 V AC at In/2, 6,000 cycles at 440 V AC at In, 6,000 cycles at 690 V AC at In/2, and 3,000 cycles at 690 V AC at In. Rated insulation voltage 800 V AC, rated impulse withstand voltage 8 kV.
Electrical shock protection class II on the front face. The manufacturer provides RoHS, REACH, and UL documentation with the product; these are available on request at quote time.
