The thermal-magnetic trip element handles overloads (the thermal bimetal) separately from short circuits (the solenoid), so you get time-delayed protection on sustained overcurrent and instant clearing on a hard fault. At 32 A and 2 poles, this is a double-pole MCB protecting both line conductors on a single-phase 230 V circuit, or one leg of a split-phase service.
