Planetary gearbox for precision motion — 15:1 reduction, 44 N.m continuous

Continuous output torque is 44 N.m, with a maximum intermittent rating of 70 N.m — the 44 N.m figure is the one to design around for duty cycles that run past the thermal time constant of the housing. Efficiency sits at 94 %, meaning 6 % of the input power is lost as heat in the gear mesh and bearings; for a 400 W servo that's about 24 W dissipated in the gearbox body, well within the black anodised aluminium housing's thermal budget at 30 °C ambient.
Torsional backlash is 25 arc.min maximum — that's the lost motion at the output shaft when the input reverses direction. For a positioning axis that indexes to a hard stop or a ball-screw nut, 25 arc.min translates to roughly 0.42° of output-shaft play; if the application needs tighter repeatability, a lower-backlash variant from the GBX family is the right call. Torsional rigidity is 2.5 N.m/arcmin — under the 44 N.m continuous load the output shaft twists about 17.6 arcmin from the elastic wind-up alone, before any backlash. Service life is 30000 hours at 100 rpm output speed and 30 °C ambient — that is about 3.4 years of continuous 24/7 operation at that speed. Running at higher output speed or ambient temperature above 30 °C reduces life; the 30000-hour figure is the baseline for sizing. Moment of inertia reflected to the input is 0.077 g.cm² — negligible for most servo sizing calculations, but worth adding to the reflected load inertia when the motor inertia is below 0.5 g.cm².
