Torque, ratio, and backlash – the fit parameters
The GBX1600051382D is a planetary gearbox with straight teeth, 160 mm external diameter, and a 5:1 reduction ratio. Continuous output torque is 450 N.m, with a maximum of 720 N.m – the margin above continuous covers acceleration peaks and momentary overloads without exceeding the gear train's mechanical limit. Torsional backlash is ≤6 arc.min, which governs positioning repeatability in indexing or servo-driven axes. For applications requiring tighter angular accuracy, a lower-backlash variant would be needed; at this level the gearbox suits general motion control where occasional reversal does not demand sub-arcmin precision.
Efficiency, service life, and maintenance
Rated efficiency is 96 %, meaning 4 % of input power is lost as heat in the gear mesh and bearings – a figure that keeps the thermal rise low enough to avoid forced cooling in most duty cycles. The gearbox is lubricated for life, so no oil-change intervals or breather vents are needed; it ships sealed and stays sealed for the service life. Service life is 30,000 hours at 100 rpm and 30 °C ambient. If the application runs at higher speed or temperature, the life derates – the 30,000-hour figure is the baseline for sizing. The -25 to 90 °C operating range covers most indoor industrial environments, but sustained operation near the upper end will shorten the grease life.
Shaft loads and mounting flexibility
Maximum axial force (Fa) is 6000 N at 100 rpm for the 30,000-hour life target, and 8000 N if the application accepts a 10,000-hour life. Radial force (Fr) at mid-span on the output shaft is 4200 N for the longer life, 6000 N for the shorter. These limits are the bearing load ratings – exceeding them shortens life or causes premature failure. Mounting position is any position, which simplifies integration into vertical, horizontal, or inverted orientations. The shaft output seal is rated IP54 – splash-proof from the shaft side, but the gearbox body itself is not sealed against washdown; the IP54 rating applies only at the shaft exit.
