What the torque ratings tell you
The GBX1600401404F: This is a 160 mm-frame planetary gearbox with a 40:1 reduction ratio. The continuous output torque is 700 Nm at 100 rpm and 30 °C — that's the number to size against for steady-state servo or stepper-driven loads. Maximum output torque hits 1120 Nm under the same conditions, which covers acceleration peaks and occasional overloads. Backlash is 10 arc-min maximum, straight-tooth gearing. That's a standard-precision class — fine for positioning conveyors, rotary tables, and general automation axes where repeatability under a few arc-minutes isn't critical.
Shaft loads and service life
Rated for 30,000 hours at 100 rpm and 30 °C, lubricated for life — no oil changes on the route. Maximum axial force is 6000 N and maximum radial force is 4200 N at the mid-point of the output shaft, both at the 30,000-hour rating. Push those forces to 8000 N axial and 6000 N radial and the service life drops to 10,000 hours. The IP54 shaft output seal keeps dust and splash out, but it's not washdown-rated — keep it out of direct spray. The black anodized aluminium housing sheds heat reasonably well, and the C45 steel shaft handles typical mounting and keyway stresses.
Efficiency and noise floor
Efficiency is 94 % at rated load — expect about 42 W of heat loss at 700 Nm output. Noise level is 70 dB at 1 m, no-load, which is typical for straight-tooth planetarys. If you need quieter operation for a sound-sensitive line, a helical or spiral-bevel box would be quieter, but this one is fine for general machine builds.
